Dutch

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Dutch ommecomen (to pass by, end, die). Equivalent to om +‎ komen. Cognate with Middle High German umbekomen (to pass by, end, die), whence modern German umkommen. Compare the phrase om het leven komen, and further ombrengen, om het leven brengen. Regarding the broader semantic use in both Middle Dutch and Middle High German, it is not certain that the short verbs are mere ellipses of the phrases with leven, though they have without doubt been influenced by them.
