German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from French local, from Latin localis.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /loˈkaːl/
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -aːl

Noun

[edit]

Lokal n (strong, genitive Lokales or Lokals, plural Lokale)

  1. A restaurant, especially when small and/or traditional; a pub that serves hot food; an inn.
  2. (in certain compounds) A room or facility used for public services.
    Wahllokalpolling station
    Wartelokalwaiting room

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Note that Lokal is a false friend and does not mean "local". The general word to refer to a "local" is Einheimischer/Einheimische if you are referring to a person who was born somewhere and has always lived there.
  • To refer to the same meaning the same as the English locale, on the other hand, there are Ort m and Örtlichkeit f.
