This page needs images of the deforestation on the ground and from the air
[edit]Would really add to the appreciation of the information...and seems like a basic need Avram Primack (talk) 18:24, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- A satalite image showing already deforested areas and areas being deforested now and a scale in kilometers and miles at the bottom, would help people understand this better.Provocateur (talk)
- This article needs to be rewritten from a neutral point of view. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tigerjojo98 (talk • contribs) 14:10, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
- A neutral point of view would indicate how much rainforest has been eliminated and at what rate and would provide photos and maps showing the deforestation.
Why doesn't the chart have information based off of the year 2019 that we are currently living in? SierraWebb (talk) 16:05, 3 October 2019 (UTC)Sierra WebbSierraWebb (talk) 16:05, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
Bizare edit
[edit]There is now a section titled "Optimistic outlook" that is a completely uncited and unsubstantiated counterargument to the idea of Amazon Rainforest deforestation. There is not only an obvious bias to the language, but the very premise has no place in this article (or on wikipedia in general), unless the author can supply good evidence that it may be true. As it stands, it appears to be nothing more than denialism. Druep (talk) 03:40, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
"At 2007 rates, it was considered that in two decades the Amazon Rainforest would be reduced by 40%."
[edit]I somehow cannot verify this using basic arithmetic and the figures given in the WP article's table (I don't have access to the source of the statement itself): In 2007, we have ~3,387,000 km² rain forest remaining, and an annual loss of 11,500 km². In two decades, you would then lose an additional 2 x 10 x 11,500 km² or 230,000 km² and end up at 3,387,000 - 230,000 km² = 3,157,000 km², which is still 77% (= 3,157,000 km² / 4,100,000 km²) of the 1970 starting area, or a 23% loss -- a far cry from the 40% loss claimed.
If the figures in the statement's source (Scott Wallace, 2007, Last of the Amazon, National Geographic magazine, 2007 issue, pp. 40-71, January 2007) are significantly different from those in the WP table, I think it's worth a mention.
What do you think, everyone?

" It has been calculated in 2006 that McDonald's ... "
[edit]" ... and its suppliers were then responsible for 70,000 km² of the Amazon's deforestation in the preceding three years." -- according to the WP table, the total Amazon deforestation for 2003, 2004 and 2005 was just over 70,000 km²; which would mean that McD and Co were responsible for the entire Amazon deforestation in these three years. This seems worthy of verification to me, does someone have access to the original Greenpeace source? They might have a larger overall figure for deforestation, which puts the statement in perspective and should be added to the WP article, in my opinion.
Thanks for your help! --Georgepauljohnringo (talk) 20:32, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- This abuse of the McDonald's was a famous troll in the relative early years of the Internet as forum use grew. If there is any listing of the people who have had an hand in the destruction of Amazonia or in any other impact related environment, a source to these places should be pointed out.
