Ranya (Sorani Kurdish: ڕانیە, romanized: Ranye, Arabic: رانية) is a town in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and is part of the Sulaymaniyah Governorate. It is twinned with Duluth, Minnesota.[1][2]

Geographical Location

Ranya is located in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, approximately 70 km northeast of Sulaymaniyah city. It is situated near the Hawraman Mountains and lies at an altitude of about 1,300 meters.[3]

History

Ranya has a rich history, having been an important center for Kurdish culture and Kurdish politics. The town has been a focal point for key historical events, particularly during the Iraq Civil War, which left a lasting impact on the region.
