Pixetell is a screen video capture program, published by Ontier. Users select the area of the screen or the window that is to be captured before recording begins; it is also possible to capture the entire screen area. You can also talk, and / or use a web-camera, add voice and video to personalize the message.

Content production

Recording

The person recording the message is able to jump from application to application while recording the Pixetell. The recording person can pause recording, stop recording and start over, or pause, go back, and edit specific instances out of a recording. The person recording can use their mouse to highlight where on the screen the person receiving the message should look.

Post-production

After the Pixetell message has been captured, the person recording can splice in different content to make sure their message is properly communicated.

Deployment

The program allows files to be stored in its own proprietary format, but can be viewed by anyone with Flash installed on their computer. The person who has recorded the video can email, drag and drop, or paste the Pixetell message into their email, twitter, IM, or other communication methods.

Reviews

Pixetell does have its shortcomings; dependency on modern operating systems for composing, load time for viewing Pixetells and a few other issues. VentureBeat (blog)|VentureBeat as featured in The New York Times featured Pixetell " Pixetell is a service that tries to liven up the boring, text-based emails by letting you send links to multimedia presentations (incorporating screen recording, voice, documents, and more) to someone’s inbox. It’s like a richer form of email, or an asynchronous web meeting, where people don’t have to coordinate their schedules." [1] In a wrap-up of DEMO 2009, Arik Hesseldahl of Business Week (magazine) said "…Pixetell, creates a way to seriously improve communications via email or pretty much any other medium.."[2]
