A Hardware token is a device which stores information, for use mainly in identification or the exchange of information.

Like the hardware dongles used by computer programs to prove ownership of the program. A dongle is placed in an open port (serial port, or usb port etc. ) and the program accesses the device to authorize the use of the program.
