Charles Van Veegaete (22 December 1877 – 1958) was a Belgian international referee[1] who was a co-founder, president, and patron of US Tourquennoise, whose stadium now bears his name.[2][3] He is the author of one of the first books on refereeing, L'Arbitre de Football, the first edition of which appeared in 1932.[4]

Biography

[edit]

In 1898, Van de Veegaete participated in the founding of the US Tourquennoise, where he was captain of the first team in 1904, and later he became the club's president in 1910.[2][3] The club's stadium now bears his name.[2][3][5] He later became close friends with the club's manager Fernand Desrousseaux.[6]

In 1905, Van de Veegaete became a referee, and joined the Regional Arbitration Commission of the North.[2] He officiated for more than 20 years, but he is especially recognized in the world of football for having written one of the first treatises on refereeing.[2][4]

He was named a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1949.[7]
