Pannalal Girdharlal Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (P.G.D.A.V) College is a constituent college of University of Delhi.[3] Established in 1957, it offers various courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate level and open schooling.

P.G.D.A.V College, located in Nehru Nagar near Lajpat Nagar in New Delhi, is a constituent college of Delhi University's South Campus. The college boasts a well-equipped infrastructure, including two seminar halls, a computer centre, a bank, a library, and laboratories, along with multiple playgrounds for sports such as cricket, football, badminton, basketball, and volleyball. However, the college's cricket ground has been allocated to a cricket academy, and as a result, students are prohibited from utilizing the field for recreational purposes. It is noteworthy that the canteen at P.G.D.A.V College is considered to be the largest in all Delhi University colleges.

History

Following the demise of Swami Dayanand Saraswati on October 30, 1883, there arose a need to uphold his legacy by disseminating education, eliminating mental and spiritual illiteracy, and eradicating the social and religious vices that pervaded contemporary society. To this end, the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic Trust and Management, widely known as the DAV movement, was established. On June 1, 1886, the movement's first DAV School was founded in Lahore, with Lala Hans Raj serving as its headmaster. This school was subsequently converted into a college on April 28, 1888, with Lala Hans Raj becoming its inaugural principal.[4][5]

The DAV movement emerged as a result of a dynamic interplay between the forces of orthodoxy and heterodoxy, revivalism and reform, faith and reason, all guided by the leadership of esteemed individuals such as Rai Bahadur Lala Lal Chand (1852-1912), Mahatma Hans Raj (1864-1938), Pt. Guru Dutta Vidyarthi (1864-1890), Lala Lajpat Rai (1865-1928), Bhai Parmanand (1874-1947), Lala Durga Das, Principal Sain Das (1840-1890), Bakshi Ram Rattan, Dr. Mukund Lal Puri, Meher Chand, among others. At present, the DAV movement boasts a network of 780 educational institutions both in India and abroad.[4][5]

The P.G.D.A.V. College was inaugurated on August 17, 1957, in a modest manner. The establishment was initiated by Pannalal Girdharlal, a notable figure in the business world of Delhi at that time, in collaboration with the DAV Management & Trust. Pannalal Girdharlal is currently associated with prominent corporations such as Victor Cables Corporation Ltd and Pannalal Girdharlal Ltd. The college was established in a small building located on Chitragupta Road, New Delhi. The institution began its operations with a limited number of teachers and a small group of students.[4][5]

P.G.D.A.V. College initiated its evening classes on July 18, 1958, with the primary aim of providing higher education to employed learners. Initially, the college operated from a section of a pre-existing school until 1972. It was later relocated to Mandir Marg for a temporary period of slightly over three years. Subsequently, the institution was established in its present location in Nehru Nagar, where it continues to stand.[4][5]
