Yes it does serve the public. It provides historical information to explain its origin and purpose and why the modern version is so called.

Article purpose
editDoes this article actually serve the public? does it explain or educate a reader with regards to a pretty self-evident object? i may be wrong here, but thats the beauty of opinion. Jonomacdrones 02:29, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- Pen and Paper Clip are both rather self-evident... Ahanix1989 20:41, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Jockey what?
editI've lived in Seattle for almost twenty years, and I don't ever recall hearing the term "jockey box" for referring to a glove compartment. 24.41.51.199 03:06, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
I second that, from Olympia, Washington, never heard anyone call it a "jockey box." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.5.202.204 (talk) 13:55, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Third that, from Bellevue for 20+ years and never heard that til this wiki page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.114.135.26 (talk) 20:49, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Lets just remove or edit that reference. A hit comes up in Encarta referencing the Upper Rocky Mountains down to Texas.Beetlecat (talk) 21:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Yes, remove the jockey box, I lived in Northern Utah and Southern Idaho and everyone calls it the glove box. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.8.154.65 (talk) 17:51, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Dubious statement
edit"A few modern cars contain knee airbags on the passenger side, which may block the glove compartment in the event of a collision, rendering it and its contents inaccessible until the airbag has deflated sufficiently to be moved."
This is nonsense. Airbags deflate within a second of being deployed.Eregli bob (talk) 07:35, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
Agreed. Removed. 75.111.48.169 (talk) 04:15, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Well, it is technically correct information, even if it is entirely useless — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.110.184.74 (talk) 19:07, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
