The Dresden Codex is a thirteenth or fourteenth-century book and is the oldest surviving book from the Americas. The codex was rediscovered in the city of Dresden and is how the Maya manuscript received its present name. It is located in the museum of the Saxon State Library in Dresden, Germany.

The pages are 8 in high and can be folded like an accordion; when unfolded the codex is 12 ft long. It has Mayan hieroglyphs and refers to an original text of some three or four hundred years earlier. It describes local history, customs, and traditions and also has mathematical astronomical tables and religious references related to calendars.
