The Snowy Crone

The snowy crone, also known as the snow witch, is an unseen character in Elden Ring. She was the secret mentor of Ranni the Witch.^[1]

Background[]

The snowy crone was a heretical witch who practiced forbidden magic deep within the woods.^[2][3] She taught these cold sorceries to Lunar Princess Ranni in secret,^[1] and warned the young Carian to beware the dark moon.^[4]

Characteristics[]

The snowy crone was described as an elderly woman dressed in clothing as white as the snow itself.^[5] She wore a heavy cloak of gray furs and a frozen hat with a wide brim and pointed tip.^[2] The blue, four-armed doll inhabited by Ranni's soul was modeled after the crone's likeness.^[6]

Notes[]

• Of the spells imparted by the old snow witch,^[7] three are obtainable in-game: Freezing Mist, Frozen Armament, and Glintstone Icecrag.
• The icy, wide-brimmed hat and white robes Ranni wears once belonged to the snow witch.^[3]
  • After Ranni resumes her empyrean journey, the Snow Witch set may be found in Renna's Rise.
  • When initially encountered at the Church of Elleh, Ranni will introduce herself as Renna the witch.^[8]
• The snowy crone may have a connection to the sorcery of the Zamor people.^{[Note 1]}

• Crone refers to "an ugly old woman".
• Promotional material for Elden Ring referred to Ranni as the Snow Witch.^[9]
• During development, the Consecrated Snowfield was called the Forest of Ancient Bowers,^[10] likely in reference to the number of petrified Minor Erdtrees in the area.^[11] These may be the woods in which the Witch taught Ranni.
