Variel is involved in the quest A Murder of Crows. Variel gives Hawke information on the Antivan assassin hiding in a mountain cave at the foot of Sundermount.
It is possible to flirt with Variel, though she rejects Hawke, telling them that she wouldn't get involved with a human. No companion effects occur from attempting this.
