“I'm not a violent man, but I must warn you, the next few hours of your life are going to be... challenging.”

Rezaren Ammosine is a Tevinter magister.

Background[]

Rezaren was born in Tevinter as the heir of House Ammosine. During his childhood, his mother owned two elven twins around his age whom she would raise as his personal assassins and bodyguards—Miriam and Neb. Although Rezaren played with the elven siblings and thought of them as family when they were children, Rezaren's mother liberally beat and mistreated them, especially Miriam, to remind the twins that they were their slaves to be used—not their equals.

During his Harrowing, he failed to defeat the demon and began to be possessed. His mother in a panic transferred the creature into Neb. Miriam horrified by this, attacked and killed his mother, and was later attacked by the possessed Neb whom Miriam was forced to kill. After the incident, Rezaren told Miriam to flee Tevinter.

Since Rezaren did not want to part ways with his "brother", he forced a demon to possess Neb's corpse; this undead Neb would serve as his silent and loyal bodyguard.

Rezaren would later become a Magister and join the Imperial Chantry in hopes of one day becoming the Imperial Divine. He is also in a private, romantic relationship with Knight-Commander Tassia.

After coaxing the Divine, Rezaren traveled to Nessum to study the artifact known as the Circulum Infinitus. Rezaren contends that if he can understand how the Circulum was made, he can modify it to be powered by an alternative means other than blood magic. His lover Tassia is concerned that his obsession with the Circulum may tempt Rezaren to do wrongs to achieve his goals. Rezaren remains determined to harness the Circulum's capability of resurrecting the dead back to life and convinces Tassia that it will be a boon to Tevinter.

In the vault under the Summer Palace in Nessum, Rezaren summons a spirit of Wisdom named Memory who he believes has knowledge of how to use the Circulum Infinitus without taking several lives. However, Memory tells him that the artifact is incredibly dangerous, and that if it is acquired by a certain person, all of Tevinter will burn. Rezaren tries to force the spirit to tell him who wants the artifact, but this forces Memory to transform into a Pride demon. Despite being held in the magic circle where he was summoned, Memory is able to call several shades into existence. Tassia helps Rezaren destroy most of the shades except one, who manages to disrupt the circle and free the demon. With Tassia's help, Rezaren is able to restrain and banish the demon before it can seize the artifact. After the battle, Tassia states that if the Circulum is a threat to Tevinter, then they need to destroy it—but Rezaren insists that he has to keep trying and states that it is the person who seeks the Circulum who is the true danger, not the artifact itself. Before he begins to go into a rant about how he won't let anything hinder his efforts; Tassia interrupts him, tells him she doesn't want to lose him, and pleads with him to not force her to protect him from himself or endanger the people she is meant to protect. Rezaren reassures her that he will have to return to Minrathous soon and one way or another, his study with the Circulum will end. Hearing the call for the evening Chant, Rezaren resets the wards around the Circulum, and the two of them head up into the cathedral.

He emerges in the middle of the Chant while Tassia is trying to get Neb to tell her if he's been up to anything suspicious. He tells Tassia that he would like to stroll around, and she decides to accompany him. Though he tries to shake her off later, Tassia can tell that he wants to return to the vault and continue his experiments on the Circulum. She threatens to report his actions to the Divine, as she is worried that he has become obsessed. Seeing that his goal of reviving the dead is hurting the living, he asks Tassia to guide him, and they kiss.

Only a few minutes later, the wards protecting the Circulum and the vault are triggered by Hira, which unleashes hordes of undead and demons to rampage throughout the Palace. Seeing this, Tassia drags Rezaren to safety. Escorted by Neb and a few guards, they reach the Divine's apartments. After hearing that other soldiers were deliberately trapped in the cathedral with glyphs, Tassia decides to rescue them so their combined forces can sweep the rest of the Summer Palace, while a portion of her forces are assigned to create a perimeter surrounding the Palace. Since Rezaren is the highest ranking Magister in the Palace, she tells him to stay in the Divine's apartments as it is the safest part of the Palace; a decision he is not happy about. He eventually relents so she can do her job, but asks her to secure the vault and be careful. He then enters the apartment with Neb.

Despite his initial agreement, Rezaren worries about Tassia, and believes that as a powerful Magister he should be part of the fight. He tries to force Neb to let him leave, but Neb only stares back at him impassively. Rezaren calms down—but after hearing the cries of the dragon in the vault, he uses magic to control Neb. He tells Neb to follow, and they leave the room together.

Just before one of the guards can attack Miriam and her friends, Rezaren knocks him out with magic. He is surprised, but happy to see Miriam, and affectionately welcomes his "sister" home. However, Miriam is agitated by his presence, and goes to attack him. Neb quickly separates the two, and Rezaren orders him to focus on Miriam while he deals with her friends. His skill and magic makes short work of the others despite their best efforts, and he is able to restrain them in magical fields. Miriam soon recognizes Neb, and though Rezaren tries to warn her, she lifts off his mask and sees that Neb is her brother's corpse, animated and controlled by Rezaren's magic. She angrily attacks Rezaren again, causing him to lose his concentration and free the others. Tassia and Tevinter reinforcements arrive before she can land a killing strike; Tassia's forces attack Miriam's group, which forces them to retreat from the fight. Rezaren watches in shock as Miriam is hit with an arrow by one of the guards.

After Miriam and her friends escape, he gets into an argument with Tassia about him leaving the apartment. The guards then tell them that they have one of the thieves, Hira, in their custody and also that the vault's dragon is awake but so far remains bound. Rezaren declares that he can deal with the dragon, and Tassia agrees. Once the guards leave to contain the rest of the undead, Tassia demands to know who Miriam is and (noticing Rezaren's name tattooed to her face) what's her relation to him. He confesses that she was a slave owned by his mother, trained to be his bodyguard and assassin if necessary, but they were raised as siblings. Tassia reminds him there are laws about runaway slaves, but he claims she didn't run away. Seeing her blood on a wall, he collects it so he can perform a blood magic ritual to contact Miriam and convince her to return the Circulum. Tassia is not happy about him using blood magic, but she decides to leave him to his own devices and indirectly states that she will look the other way if he uses blood magic.

He then descends into the vault with Neb, and uses the pedestal to re-petrify the dragon once more. Afterwards, Rezaren dismisses the Tevinter guards that were struggling to restrain the dragon in order to obtain privacy. Seeing the wounds Neb received from Miriam, he promises that they will be done soon. He uses Miriam's blood and his own to perform a ritual which draws her into the Fade so they can speak. The spell, however, keeps Miriam unconscious and prevents Qwydion from healing her wounds with magic.

In the Fade, Rezaren tries to comfort Miriam, but she attacks him again and again until she realises that she cannot harm him in the Fade. He shows her idealized visions of their childhood together to convince her to return the Circulum, as it is the only thing that can bring Neb back to life as he was before. As Neb's twin, Rezaren needs her blood to complete the ritual. She, in turn, shows him other visions of how his mother treated her terribly to counter his arguments that their childhood was a happy one. He insists that he was only a child, and he couldn't protect himself much less others. In response she brings up the memories of his Harrowing, when he was nearly possessed by a demon. Not wanting her son to be a failure, Rezaren's mother transferred the demon into Neb. Miriam killed her to stop the transfer, but it was too late. Her brother had become an abomination and attacked her, so she had no choice but to kill him. In the aftermath of the carnage, Rezaren tearfully asked her to flee.

The present version of Rezaren tells Miriam he understands why she did what she did, and admits that he was the one who ensured the Templars couldn't track her down. He tells her that he plans to become the Divine and change things in Tevinter, with Miriam and Neb at his side. She immediately refuses to be a part of his plans, confounding him, as he states that it was the role she was born for. He insists that they are family, and as long as she is with him she will be safe and cared for. Miriam, however, refuses to be a slave again. Rezaren's calm demeanour begins to collapse and he taunts her, saying that she has accomplished nothing with her freedom. Miriam admits that she has made mistakes, but she made them of her own free will, and asks him to let her go once again. Angry, he calls her selfish for putting her desires first. He tries again and tells her that he can save her from dying of her wounds, but she refuses, preferring to die rather than be enslaved again. Realizing that she won't change her mind, he informs her that Hira is in his custody and threatens to kill her if Miriam doesn't bring the Circulum to him. He then extracts a strange purple substance from her wound and shoves her back into the waking world. Even if he has to use coercion, Rezaren believes he can prove Miriam wrong once he has the Circulum. Rezaren then uses some form of purple magic to heal Neb's wounds.

Rezaren later interrupts Tassia's interrogation of Hira and dismisses her so he can privately interrogate Hira himself. Just as Hira begins to taunt Rezaren, Rezaren uses his magic to hurt Hira. Rezaren chastises Hira for stealing the Circulum from him and demands to know why she helped Miriam escape. Hira responds that she did it because she loves Miriam. Rezaren laughs derisively at Hira and threatens to execute Hira in front of Miriam when she returns the Circulum to him. Hira tells Rezaren that Miriam would never forgive him if he did so, but Rezaren is confident she will be grateful once he reveals to her their collusion. Later on, it is revealed that Rezaren made a deal with Hira. Rezaren arranged for the Circulum Infinitus to be moved to the Summer Palace. Hira and her group were meant to get caught and Hira would make an exchange for the Circulum. Once Hira delivered Miriam to him and he has used the Circulum to resurrect Neb, Rezaren can then let Hira go with the Circulum. Rezaren was suppose to then scuttle any investigation into the matter so that the Imperial Divine wouldn't be able to trace the theft back to Hira.

After he is notified of Miriam's arrival, Rezaren gives Neb enchanted handcuffs to apprehend Miriam and casts a glyph on Neb's palm to knock her out if she's uncooperative. While Miriam and her friends fight Tassia and Neb, Rezaren wonders what Miriam is doing. Hira tells Rezaren she is trying to rescue her and that Miriam is no longer afraid of him. Although Rezaren claims Miriam never had anything to fear from him and sees himself as not asking too much of her, Hira mocks Rezaren for being so unaware that Miriam sees him as a villain and that she knows the Circulum is somewhere he will never find. Rezaren then drags Hira outside the palace to coerce her to reveal the Circulum's location. However, Qwydion freed the vault's dragon and its rampaging caused intense damage to the palace. Rezaren and Hira were both knocked out by the falling debris of the palace's collapsing structure.

Rezaren wakes up to find Hira has escaped and that Miriam had decapitated Neb. Rezaren starts blaming himself for trusting that Miriam could be swayed into willingly joining him and also for Neb's decapitation. He apologizes to Neb and comes to the conclusion that "There can be no master without a slave, and no slave without a master." Rezaren summons a shade demon, uses blood magic to spirit bind it, and transfers it into Neb, which consequently restores the body. When a Tevinter mage arrived to inform him that Tassia needs him to fix the pedestal to contain the vault's dragon, Rezaren makes the mage a human sacrifice—and also draws the blood of the dead Tevinter guards—to power his blood magic and mind-control the dragon. With the exception of Tassia, the Tevinter guards cheered as they witnessed Rezaren use blood magic to bring the dragon under his command.

Later on; Rezaren, Neb, and the dragon he mind-controlled attack Miriam's group at their safe house. Miriam willingly surrenders herself and the Circulum, and also offers her full compliance in exchange for the safety of her comrades. Rezaren has become ruthless due to Miriam's resistance and now only sees Miriam as his slave. He now seeks to punish Miriam by killing her friends in front of her. But fist, he sheds his, Miriam's, the dragon's, and Neb's blood to do Neb's resurrection ritual with the Circulum. The Circulum summons Neb's alleged spirit. Neb's spirit recognizes Miriam, and Rezaren pleads with the spirit to retrieve its body and complete the ritual. Neb's spirit only looks at Rezaren briefly before floating to the body. Miriam apologizes to Neb for not being able to save him but pleads with him to not ressurect himself and return to a horrible life. Neb's spirit only reassures Miriam that everything will be alright and that he loves her before touching the body and causing it to disintegrate. Roland and Lacklon then shoot a grenade at Rezaren, and its subsequent explosion disrupts the ritual and stuns Rezaren momentarily. Rezaren swears profanities at Miriam and Neb for being ungrateful as Miriam and him fight—but Miriam ultimately kills him and asserts that she and Neb never belonged to him.
