The Nahashin Marshes is a volatile, volcanic marshland located in Orlais.[1]

Background[]

The Nahashin Marshes is an area in north-western Orlais that is populated by so-called marshfolk. For a brief time during the Glory Age, the Nahashin Marshes declared independence from the rest of Orlais, forming a new kingdom under Lord Roux Marchette. While the Orlesian Empire fought against the elven kingdom of the Dales, the marshes were left unbothered. Once the elves were defeated, Orlais turned its attention to the local rebellion; however, forces sent into the marshland had trouble locating their opponents, likely due to the difficulty of the terrain. "King Roux" is commonly portrayed with a mighty axe and remains a legend among the marshfolk.[2]

The marshes are described as cold, wet, full of snakes, murky, and inhospitable.[3] In contrast, its inhabitants are said to possess a great deal of hospitality; they readily invite travelers into their homes.[4] The marshfolk might be one of the last people who speak solely in the Orlesian language, as most citizens are fluent in the common tongue in addition to speaking the local language.[5]

There are remote outposts located in the marshes, which often serve as places of exile for Orlesian aristocrats who fall out of favour with the court. They guard the borders, oversee villages, deal with bandits, and root out remnants of "pagan worship".[3]

According to a Ciriane legend, the bow that belonged to the mythical archer named Arrowwood was bound in an iron case and buried in the Nahashin Marshes so that no one could use it again.[6]
