United Artists Corporation (UA) (doing business as United Artists Digital Studios) was an American film and television production studio owned by MGM. It was the third independent distributor of Walt Disney Productions' films following Pat Powers' Celebrity Productions and Columbia Pictures and preceding RKO Radio Pictures.
History[]
- Pre-Disney
The original studio of that name was founded in 1919 by D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks, with the intention of controlling their own interests rather than depending upon the powerful commercial studios of the time.
- Disney-related events
From 1932 to 1937, United Artists distributed 53 Mickey Mouse and 41 Silly Symphonies cartoons produced by Walt Disney Productions following Disney's fallout with Columbia Pictures. Following pressure to give United Artists television rights to Disney's short subjects, Walt Disney Productions struck a distribution deal with RKO Radio Pictures. RKO would continue to distribute nearly all of Disney's films from 1937 to 1956.[1] Despite this, two of Disney's feature films were distributed by United Artists.
- Post-Disney
United Artists has been a subsidiary of MGM since 1981. The current United Artists formed in November 2006 under a partnership between producer/actor Tom Cruise and his production partner, Paula Wagner, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., an MGM company. Paula Wagner left the studio on August 14, 2008. Cruise owned a small stake in the studio until late 2011. It is now a fully owned subsidiary of MGM, which itself is owned by MGM Holdings.
