A singular Plaza Mariachi serves as a character in the 2017 Disney/Pixar animated feature film, Coco. He is a musician who lives in Santa Cecilia.

Background[]

This man shows a friendly personality to Miguel. As his name implies, he wears a blue mariachi outfit and uses his own instrument for music. While talking to Miguel, he asks him of trying to be a musician like him so that he can have talent. However, he dislikes whenever one furiously shows a hostile action against him like during his encounter with Abuelita Elena, Miguel's grandmother.

Role in the film[]

The mariachi is seen listening to Miguel's story about Ernesto de la Cruz who asks him to clean his shoe rather than telling the story and while playing his guitar. As Miguel cleans his shoe while asking about his family's ban on music, the mariachi asks him that if he were like him, he would march right up to his family to say that he is a musician. As Miguel tells the mariachi that he plays by himself, the latter tells him that De la Cruz "walked into the plaza and played out loud". He then shows two employees placing a talent show poster for the Day of the Dead, telling him to sign up for a talent show (despite not being aware that Miguel must have talent and bring his own instrument to participate) which Miguel is reluctant to do so. The mariachi asks Miguel about what Ernesto said and as Miguel says his line, the mariachi hands him his guitar so that he can play like him. However, Abuelita, Tío Berto and Prima Rosa approach him which Abuelita berates him for being a distraction to Miguel due to the family's ban on music, telling the mariachi to stay away from him. The mariachi that was listening to Miguel's story makes no further appearances after that.

Trivia[]

  • The song that the mariachi plays is an instrumental snippet of La Llorona which would later be sung during the climax of the film by Imelda and Ernesto de la Cruz.
    • Ironically, the song was also heard during a montage of Abuelita telling Miguel to stay away from music due to the family's ban on it where Abuelita yells at a group of musicians singing the song.
  • His voice actor, Lombardo Boyar, also voiced Gustavo in the film.
  • It is unknown if he is aware of Ernesto being revealed to be a fraud with Héctor being the real greatest musician of all time which causes Ernesto's legacy to be tarnished.
