"The Prophecy Comes True" is the eighth and final episode of the first season of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It was released on January 30, 2024.

Synopsis[]

Mount Olympus beckons and Percy must face his greatest battle yet.

Plot[]

Percy challenges Ares to one-on-one combat, declaring that if he manages to land a hit on him, he has to return Hades' helm. While Ares is a stronger and quicker opponent, Percy uses his powers to summon a tidal wave that completely incapacitates Ares, allowing him to swipe at his achilles heel. Ares angrily declares himself Percy's enemy and disappears, leaving behind the helm. The trio make their way to the beach house where they are greeted by Alecto who takes the helm back to Hades. Percy announces his intent to return the bolt to Zeus despite missing the deadline and tells Annabeth and Grover to return to camp.

Percy makes his way to the Empire State Building and enters Mount Olympus where he finds Zeus and returns the bolt back to him. He tells him that he heard Kronos' voice and that he is plotting his return. Zeus is well aware of Kronos' plan, but does not think much of it and tells him to leave, intending to go to war with Poseidon as planned. When Percy insists that his views are flawed and that his family is a mess, Zeus is infuriated, but Poseidon arrives and announces that he will surrender the war. Zeus finally takes his leave as Poseidon finally shares a moment with Percy before sending him home.

Percy arrives back at camp where he is given a hero's welcome. While conversing with Annabeth, they spot Clarisse and get with Luke in an effort to discuss how to handle her and the theft of the bolt. Later on, Percy comes to the realization that Luke never discussed the theory that Clarisse stole the bolt with Chiron because he knew that it was wrong. Not only that, but the Oracle mentioned that a friend will betray him. Percy realizes that Luke was the one who stole the bolt. Angered over how the gods treat their children, Luke announces his plan to release Kronos and the two fight. Annabeth reveals herself, having overheard their conversation, as Luke escapes.

Percy prepares to leave camp and says his goodbyes to Chiron and Mr. D, the latter of whom seemed to genuinely not realize that his name was Percy. Annabeth announces that she will return to her father and go on vacation with him while Grover finally gets his searcher's license to go see Pan. The trio make a promise to meet each other again next summer. Percy returns to the beach house and is reunited with Sally, only for it to be revealed to be a dream from Kronos. Percy intends to find and defeat Kronos. Percy is finally back in New York City with his mother as the two embrace a new chapter in their lives together.

In a mid-credits scene, it is revealed that Gabe was kicked out and has hired an inefficient lawyer for the divorce. Unable to enter the apartment due to the locks changing, Gabe finds Percy's package that is labeled "return to sender" and presumptuously opens it, seeing Medusa's head and turning to stone.

Guest starring[]

Co-starring[]

  • Andrew Alvarez as Chris Rodriguez
  • Threnody Tsai as Sarah
  • Bola Omodara as Security Guard
  • Nick Boraine as Kronos

Trivia[]

  • The title comes from the twenty-second chapter of the The Lightning Thief, while the episode adapts that chapter, the rest of chapter twenty and chapter twenty-one.
  • This marks Lance Reddick’s final appearance on television following his death the previous year. This episode is dedicated to his memory.

Book comparisons[]

  • The fight with Ares happened on the Santa Monica bay in front of thousands of civilians with the cops even getting invovled. The action is instead moved to outside of Percy and Sally's beach house.
  • Ares explains that if Percy died in the Underworld, then Poseidon would declare war on Hades, thus sending all three major gods at war with one another. This part is not brought up in the series.
  • In the book, Alecto arrived on the beach with her sisters to take the helm back. In the series, she is inside the beach house by herself.
  • The explanation for how Percy and his friends return to New York is not shown. In the book, they risk it and take a plane, with them splitting up as soon as they make it to the city.
  • In the book, Percy encounters all the gods within the throne room. In the series, he only meets Zeus with Poseidon showing up later.
  • After Olympus, Percy initially went back to his apartment where he reunited with Sally and had one final encounter with Gabe. In the series, he goes straight back to Camp Half-Blood.
  • When Percy returned to camp, he, Annabeth, and Grover were given a gigantic ceremony. In the series, it is simplified to just a typical welcome back celebration.
  • The entire scene with Percy and Luke happened on the last day of camp during the day. In the series, it happens close to the last day and at night while a fireworks celebration is happening.
  • In the book, Luke tries to kill Percy with a pit scorpion while he escapes. Percy is brought back to the big house and saved just in time. In the series, Luke attempts to recruit Percy to his cause, but the two have a brief swordfight with Annabeth arriving. Luke escapes afterwards.
  • The series adds a proper goodbye between Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, with the three promising to see each other again.
  • Percy returned home where he learned that Gabe had been even more abusive to Sally after she returned. When he discovers the returned package of Medusa's head from Poseidon, he urges Sally to use it on Gabe where afterwards, she sells him off as a statue. The series changes it to Gabe getting locked out of the apartment and finding the package and opening it himself. In this version, the package was collectively returned by the gods, most likely out of spite for Percy's initial act.
