Memory Implantation (メモリ���入, Memori chūnyū) is a psychological technique that is used to implant memories into the minds of others, which can either be the memories of others, or false memories manufactured by the user. They can completely rewrite a person's memories to change their personalities, knowledge and self-identification,
Overview[]
This technique is used by APE as a method of reprimanding individuals who violate regulations. All remnants of humanity seem to have undergone this procedure but it is commonly used against the Parasites as a way of keeping them obedient if they break any rules. In addition to the victim’s memories being erased and altered with false ones, their personalities can be altered to correspond with the fake memories.
Although it is considered impossible to undo the procedure once it has been used on someone, it is not completely effective. There are a few cases in which certain people gradually recall memories they lost or were replaced with false ones, or, in Hiro’s case, can regain their erased memories in an extrasensory moment.

List of People Who Suffered Memory Implantation[]
- Hiro - As punishment for helping Zero Two escape from the Garden and for asking questions on banned knowledge and the outside world, Hiro’s memories regarding the escape and Zero Two were erased. He later recovers those memories after connecting too deeply with Zero Two in Strelizia
- Zero Two - Zero Two, as a highly classified test subject, was forced to undergo memory implantation for escaping with Hiro. Despite the adults attempting to wipe her memories several times, she was able to retain fragments of her memories out of the yearning to never forget him. However, she didn’t realize Hiro was her ‘darling’ from then until he regained his memories.
- Kokoro - Kokoro was punished with memory implantation for possessing forbidden knowledge on reproduction and developing an intimate relationship with Mitsuru, including staging a wedding ceremony. All her memories of Mitsuru were removed but she still has fragments of certain memories when she says his name.
- Mitsuru - Mitsuru was punished with having his memories of Kokoro erased after they began an intimate relationship, including their attempts to conceive a child and staging a wedding ceremony. However, he has some fragments of certain memories when he says her name.
- Nana - Nana experiences a mental breakdown following the death of her partner, whom she loved, and was reprimanded this by having her memories of her partner and his death erased. She regains fragments of those memories after a puberty relapse.
