The Sterling AWE was an Altered World Event which occurred near the town of Sterling, Colorado on May 4, 2016. It resulted in the discovery of a paranatural "sphere" or dodecahedron made of an unknown stone-like material. The sphere has a broken portion exposing a hollow interior. It was transported by the Federal Bureau of Control to a dedicated storage chamber in the Oldest House's Containment Sector, and has been inert ever since.
Event summary[]
A paranatural object, the sphere, manifested in a field outside the town of Sterling, Colorado near a billboard on May 4, 2016. The object's appearance vaporized the soil around it, and produced a bright flash visible from the town, but no sound. Local authorities discovered the sphere, but assumed it had fallen out of the sky. The Federal Bureau of Control learned of the incident when a series of watchwords were flagged over a monitored police communication channel, and FBC agents from a regional office arrived on the scene two hours later. Analysis by FBC researches began the next day. They learned the sphere was composed of an unrecognized material, and was both hollow and breached, as if it had contained something that had broken out of it.
Eventually, the sphere was relocated to the Oldest House via a truck lined with Black Rock panels and then the New York City subway tunnels, and kept it in the Containment Sector with plans to move it to the Investigations Sector once it had been proven safe. As of October 2019, the sphere was still stored in the Containment Sector.
The cover story disseminated by the FBC Communications Department to the public framed the Sterling AWE as a small meteor strike. America Overnight, the conspiracy radio show controlled by the FBC, further muddied the waters by claiming the Sterling AWE was a crashed UFO.
The Willow AWE bears some similarities with the Sterling AWE. A hollow sphere of stone-like material was also retrieved from Willow, Alaska, along with some vitrified soil. An FBC agent died while investigating the Willow AWE, seemingly from blood loss caused by a possible animal attack.

Trivia[]
- Although the Sterling AWE sphere is described as having a "broken portion" in the Case Files, the sphere itself is depicted as solid, albeit lightly eroded across its surface with lichen-like patches. There are also several henge-like pillars of the same material positioned around the sphere.
- Though not mentioned in the case files, the central object has the shape of a pentagonal dodecahedron, one of the five Platonic solids, with all faces being congruent regular – in this case – pentagons.
- Jesse Faden enters the Sterling AWE chamber during the side quest Mr. Tommasi, which becomes available from Emily Pope after finishing the main story mission The Face of the Enemy.
