Français : Voilier RAINBOW WARRIOR à quai au port de Casablanca

Le premier Rainbow Warrior (littéralement Guerrier arc-en-ciel) était un navire de l'ONG écologiste Greenpeace. Il a été utilisé par cette association dans les années 1980 contre les essais nucléaires français en cours à cette époque dans le Pacifique, sur les îles polynésiennes de Moruroa et Fangataufa. Construit en 1955 à Aberdeen en Écosse en tant que chalutier sous le nom de Sir William Hardy, il a été utilisé par le ministère de l'agriculture du Royaume-Uni jusqu'en 1977. Vendu pour 40 000 £ à Greenpeace , il a subi quatre mois de travaux pour devenir le Rainbow Warrior, leur premier bateau et navire amiral, lancé le 29 avril 1978.

Greenpeace (littéralement « paix verte ») est une ONGI de protection de l'environnement présente dans plus de quarante pays à travers le monde1. Fondé en 1971 par Jim Bohlen et Irving Stowe après le mouvement Don't Make a Wave Committee visant à s'opposer aux essais nucléaires aux États-Unis, Greenpeace est un groupe de plaidoyer luttant contre ce qu'il estime être les plus grandes menaces pour l’environnement et la biodiversité sur la planète.
