Détail du tympan marial dans l'église Notre-Dame-des-Anges à Cabestany (66, France) Ce tympan est un vestige d'un portail disparu. Oeuvre attribuée au Maître de Cabestany XIIème siècle Marbre blanc de Céret ou de Saint-Béat La représentation de Saint Thomas montrant la ceinture de la Vierge comme preuve de sa résurrection est exceptionnelle dans la sculpture romane car l'incrédulité de St Thomas est plutôt connue vis à vis de la résurrection du Christ. Ce culte de la sainte ceinture est attesté dès 1173 en Italie à Prato, c'est probablement la source de l'inspiration du maître de Cabestany. (selon le cartel du centre de sculpture romane)
Ce tympan de style roman présente les grandes caractéristiques de la sculpture du Maître de Cabestany dont le vrai nom est inconnu mais dont on trouve des oeuvres d'un style semblable dans toute la région et également en Espagne. Les visages sont étranges et anguleux, les mains surdimensionnées et les corps trapus. Cette oeuvre très remarquable consacrée à la Résurrection et à l'Assomption de la Vierge Marie avait été utilisée en remploi dans le mur d'une nouvelle église. Elle a été découverte en 1930, et est aujourd'hui exposée dans l'église Notre-Dame-des-Anges de Cabestany près de Perpignan.
