River Ouse

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: River Ouse Viewed from the shingle bank near the East Pier. This was originally the entrance in Roman times but longshore drift created shingle spits that moved the river mouth eastwards to Seaford before silting and storms rendered that opening useless. The mouth here was reopened in 1539 but soon silted up again and had forced its way into the sea near Tidemills before this section was reopened again in 1733 and has been maintained ever since.
