English: HUMPHREYS GARRISON – Although Korea’s notorious monsoon season can put a damper on events, it did not stop about 60 military Retirees, and their Families, from attending the Retiree Appreciation Day activities held at the Super Gym, July 17.

The event, which was put together by the Directorate of Human Resources, along with help from the Retirement Services Office, organizations on the garrison staff and the Retiree Counsel, provided participants with free health and dental services, community information, a lunch and Korean entertainment. During the morning, various organizations set up booths and provided information and services to the retirees. Medical organizations, like the USAG-Humphreys Optometry Clinic, offered visual and glaucoma screenings. The Medical Clinic tested retirees’ blood pressure and provided them with health information. The USAG-Humphreys Dental Clinic, in particular, gave free teeth cleanings and oral cancer screenings for more than 30 retirees and family members. Among the other organizations that participated were: the American Red Cross, United Services Organization, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dankook University Hospital, Military Retiree Assistance Office, Army Career and Alumni Program, and the Defense Finance and Accounting Services. Before lunch, Col. Joseph P. Moore, Humphreys Garrison commander, spoke of his appreciation and respect for the retirees. Being the son of a Korean War veteran, Moore acknowledged that many soldiers before his time came to Korea the hard way. Moore noted that among the retirees in the room, there were more than 700 combined years of Army service. He suggested that these retirees should share their stories with each other. Another highlight of the event is that Rachel Turk, a field representative for DFAS, traveled from Cleveland, Ohio to talk to the retirees. After the luncheon, the attendees were treated with dance performances by a Korean Traditional Dance team and a Pungmul team, from the neighboring city of Cheonan.
