| Description |
English: Glimpse of marine Helsinki in summer 2007. Pleasure and hard work, summer and winter, west and east, likewise past and the present meet in this picture taken in dusk from Pohjoisranta, Helsinki, Finland. Pleasure motor and sailing boats are docked waiting for sailors to enjoy the life on seas during the summer. Behind the pleasure boat marina stand five icebreakers from various decades docked for the summer at Katajanokka. The icebreakers are used to move and navigate on ice-covered seas during winter enabling commercial ships to move on subarctic seas. Behind the first yellow-black ice breaker is the yellow building of the Ministry for
Foreign Affairs of Finland. The yellow building is a former barrack of the Russian Navy, remembering the Finnish history under Sweden and Russia before independence in 1917. |
