Deutsch: Freising, Diözesanmuseum – das Museum informiert:
„Pilgermedaillons mit dem hl. Simeon Stylites, Syrien, 6./7. Jh.“
Im Deutschen wird das Wort „Säulenheilige(r)“ oft übertragen oder gar scherzhaft gebraucht:
„... Mit andern Worten, ich habe nicht Lust, ins Kloster zu gehen oder die dem Irdischen entrückte Säulenheilige zu spielen, ...“ (Theodor Fontane, Schach von Wuthenow)

Doch beim hl. Simeon Stylites d. Ä. und d. J. ist es ganz konkret und wörtlich gemeint: Sie wählten für sich die extreme Lebensform auf einer Säule, daher der griechische Beiname „Stylites“. So zeigen ihn (welcher von beiden gemeint ist, ist unklar) auch diese drei kleinen aus Erde formgepressten Medaillons (ca. 2,5–3 cm Durchmesser) auf einer Säule, an die seitlich manchmal eine Leiter angelehnt ist (Fotos Nr. 406 und 399). Über ihm schweben Engel, seitlich knien fromme Beter. Eines der Medaillons (Foto Nr. 404) trägt außerdem eine griechische Inschrift; wenn ich richtig lese: „ΑΓΙΟΣ – ΑΓΙΟΣ“ (heilig, heilig).
Diese von Simeon Stylites d. Ä. begründete Form des Einsiedler-Mönchtums gilt als typische Erscheinung des syrischen Christentums vom 5. bis ins 10. Jahrhundert (RGG).
