Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Principle of the heavy atom method in crystal structure solution: the contribution from the partial structure factor of the heavy atom (FHA(hkl)) dominates the total structure factor F(hkl) for a reflection hkl. Both structure factors are represented in the plane of complex numbers. The red vector is the total structure factor of the reflection hkl, the blue vector is the partial structure factor from the heavy atoms. The contributions from other lighter atoms are shown in black.
