Clock Tower, St Pancras Station

| Description |
English: Clock Tower, St Pancras Station. The clock tower is at the eastern end of Sir George Gilbert Scott's frontage to St Pancras station. The building was constructed between 1868 and 1873 as the Midland Grand Hotel, and was revolutionary in its time (the first in London to incorporate lifts, for example). Nevertheless, by the 1930s it had become hopelessly outdated as a hotel, and languished as railway offices for the next 50 years - the fabric gradually deteriorating. The building was very nearly demolished in the 1960s, but was saved following a vociferous campaign, in which Sir John Betjeman was closely involved. The campaign proved a turning point and Victorian buildings began to be more widely appreciated; today it is one of Britain's best-loved buildings and is grade 1 listed. Nevertheless, it has lain empty for many years since its use as offices ceased when it no longer met modern fire standards. Today, however, the building is undergoing extensive restoration with a view to using part of it as a hotel once again - an economically viable proposition in view of the station's imminent role as London's Eurostar terminus. The wealth of architectural detail is worth studying. |
