Description

Several photos of trawl catches during the MEDITS 2005 campaign, before sorting.

The standardized scientific fishing campaigns MEDITS (MEDIterranean Trawl. Survey, bottom trawling) aim to observe fishery resources, always following the same sampling methods.

The MEDITS surveys provide spatial information on demersal species in terms of population and community indices, demographic structures and life history traits. Since 1994, these fisheries surveys have been conducted jointly by Spanish, Italian and French partners. These annual surveys (May-June) study five depth strata, defined for all sectors: 10-50 m, 50-100 m, 100-200 m, 200-500 m and 500-800 m. All the species collected including the benthos are sorted, weighed and counted. For 84 species, measurements are also taken and on 41 of these species (32 selachians, 3 bony fish, 4 crustaceans, 2 cephalopods) all the individual parameters are collected
