English: Freshmen Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NROTC) midshipmen observe a capping ceremony next to USS Trayer (BST 21) at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Aug. 15. A capping ceremony is where recruits officially become sailors by donning their Navy ball caps after successfully completing Battle Stations on board the 210-foot-long Arleigh Burke-class destroyer simulator at RTC. Trayer is the platform where recruits take their final test, Battle Stations, before graduating from RTC. Battle Stations is a 12-hour exam of 17 different scenarios, including firefighting, damage control, watch standing and mass casualty evacuations. The midshipmen from colleges and universities that make up the Chicago Consortium were on Recruit Training Command (RTC) and Naval Station Great Lakes during their annual 10-day freshmen orientation, Aug. 10-17. The Chicago Consortium is made up of midshipmen from Northwestern University, University of Illinois in Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology and Loyola University. Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), headquartered at Naval Station Great Lakes, oversees 98 percent of initial officer and enlisted accessions training for the Navy. This training includes the NROTC program at more than 150 colleges and universities. (U.S. Navy photo by Scott A. Thornbloom /Released)
