DescriptionByzantine Metaphor For The Soul and Death.jpg |
English: In Byzantine iconography, the bird in the cage represents the human soul trapped inside the body. The bird outside the cage is therefore the soul after being liberated by death. From a 6th century Byzantine mosaic found in Madaba, Jordan.
