I know we should never meet our heroes, but when I had the opportunity to fly from Sao Paulo to Buenos Aires on the Boeing 747, I took my chances and screw the old saying, because the trip worth every penny and more. This is the only picture I have of the moment because I was so anxious to board on this British Airways 747-400, that I barely remembered I still had my cameraphone in my pocket. I grew up idolizing the 'Queen of the Skies', and excluding strictly military and Space technology, I still think this big bird is the result of the apex of the human engineering. I know the A380 is bigger and the 777 is more efficient et al, but neither were developed in the early 1960s without CAD and advanced materials, computers and simulators, that's why I think the 747 is so special, at least to me. A project from the 1960s that's still relevant and even competitive in its industry, albeit clearly in its final days as a passenger airliner, is a hell of a feat... |
