English: The First National Bank (1865-67) at 315 Chestnut Street, between S. 3rd and 4th Street, Philadelphia, was designed by John McArthur, Jr. as part of the city's Bankers' Row. The building now houses the Science History Institute. (Source: Philadelphia Architecture: A Guide to the City (2nd ed.)) The institution of the First National Bank was a chartered in 1863 as the first national bank created under the Civil War banking reforms. It was the first commercial bank to issue a federal banknote. It operated independently until 1955, when it was merged into the Bank of North America and Trust Company, today part of Wells Fargo.
