Es verweist auf den Pfälzer Löwen und die seit 1358 herrschenden Wittelsbacher Stadtherren, die die (weiß-blauen) bayerischen Wecken im Wappen führten. Der Schildbord als solcher kennzeichnet das Wappen als das eines Amtes.
