AI image supposedly depicting a real person. Should never be used in any educational context because it has no basis in reality. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 00:35, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete, images exist of her aged 17 and she does not look like this. The car behind her and the double yellow lines in the road are also at least fifty years early. Belbury (talk) 12:34, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Files uploaded by Xasartha (talk · contribs)

I am nominating most (but not all) of the Indigenous Flags uploaded by Xasartha. These are all flags that are too complex to be PD-ineligible. Xasartha has consistently uploaded these files claiming to be the author on the basis they recreated an image they saw elsewhere on the internet, and "released" it as Creative Commons. Consistently, the true designers of the flags are not credited. These files fall under a mix of US and Canadian copyright jurisdiction, but as I understand it, neither nation will let somebody reproduce a copyrighted work, claim authorship, and then attempt to change the copyright status of the work.

I have excluded from this bulk delete request a number of flags that Xasartha uploaded that I understand as either PD-ineligible, or that appear to be PD due to age. It may be that there are a few more that are PD due to age, but given the sheer number of how many flags need to be sourced and how few of the ones I researched are PD due to age, I think the most prudent thing to do is bulk delete.

Intervex (talk) 01:02, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit #1 to add: if you look at User_talk:Xasartha/Archive_1 you'll see this user was warned from the very beginning that their uploads were Derivative Works. Large numbers of their uploads have already been deleted as copyright violations. Intervex (talk) 01:10, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Edit #2 to add: the inclusion of File:Flag of the Wapanum Tribe.PNG was included in error. It's below TOO, and I'm updating its information accordingly... but once I tried to update its information I could not find any WaPANum Tribe, and the WaNAPum Tribe appears not to use this flag? I retagged it with factual inaccuracy but maybe it should be deleted. Intervex (talk) 23:17, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Edit #3 to add: while checking other Cherokee flags I determined that File:Flag of the Southern Cherokee Nation.PNG is from the 19th century and hence PD. I updated its author and license information and do not think this file needs to be deleted.
Edit #4. Since creating this deletion request, 6 flags were speedy deleted because I found them in the US copyright office's database. While researching the Chickasaw flag for File:Flag of the Chickasaw Nation.svg I determined it is PD-ineligible because the colourized seal is based on a black and white seal from 1856 [2] [3]. However, as Xasartha notes, their recreation is not a faithful one, so it may still be worth deleting on the grounds of inaccuracy. Intervex (talk) 23:19, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Delete some and transfer it to the Wikipedia articles but only if the designs are accurate. SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 23:38, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not low-quality. What looks fake to you? We don't see any genitals, if that's what you mean, but the position is shown. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:04, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Delete Nah, I disagree with Ikan Kekek, this one *is* low quality. Weird camera angle, poor lighting, too tight a crop. I don't see this one ever being used. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 03:28, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep I think it’s worth keeping for the PD license— if I’m not mistaken it’s the only modern photo with this license. Having a variety of licensing options enables wider use. Dronebogus (talk) 12:44, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright violations as derivatives from Google Earth imagery. On "BY 105 crash site.png", it's clearly stated as such in the description ("English: graphic of the crash site derived using publicly available information and put on Google Earth Pro map"), for the other nominated files, it stands in the legends of the images on EN-WP, e.g. in Inex-Adria_Aviopromet_Flight_1308#Accident: "Fig. 2 JP1308 flight pattern - a derivative graphic created from publicly available information and put on Google Earth map as a background."

Out of scope as "Files that add nothing educationally distinct to the collection of images we already hold covering the same subject, especially if they are of poor or mediocre quality." Currently not realistically useful for educational purposes as the plant depicted is not identified. Categorization and description are too much boilerplate and do nothing to make the (technically decent) still reusable. Grand-Duc (talk) 09:53, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep The plant is not yet identified, as thousands of others, but can easily be identified since what is represented is precisely the inflorescence. Since the camera coordinates are recorded too, the photo is of very obvious educative and scientific interest. I would suggest Grand-Duc to refrain from doing this kind of nonsense nominations, and instead dedicate his volunteer time to helping with the curatorship and categorization of the files. Darwin Ahoy! 10:16, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DarwIn, I'm doing exactly what you suggested, curating. And yes, the inflorescence is clearly depicted, but we lack the circumstances of the find, especially if the plant is man-planted or occurs naturally. Additionally, the form, position and number of leaves are also important criteria for plant identification, and these are not visible here. I did a quick image search though which point to a possible cultivar of Celosia argentea, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to ascertain it with enough certainty.
I still maintain my opinion that there are not enough information yet attached to this file to make it useful enough and re-usable or at least easily findable in our collections. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:41, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'd tend to  Keep, though more specific description and categorization would be helpful. This is not what I think of as a typical vacation snap, as no-one is posed in the picture, and it's definitely of a potentially useful motif. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:22, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Did you see the upload history of the photographer of this challenged picture? He provided a plethora of images with a naming pattern of "Trip Photo by Immanuelle 4-digit-number", leading me to assume he wandered around Bangkok, Thai temples and Kathmandu, snapping pictures of stuff that caught his eyes. This behaviour, or at least the published results, does still look like "vacations snaps" for me, I'd expect people posing mostly only when you're travelling in groups. Of course, vacations snaps (e.g. from city trips) aren't useless per se, but I think that the combination of "vacation snap + huge lack of provided information about depicted subject" makes for a falling out of our project scope. I'd gladly retract the DR if and when Immanuelle (or any other knowledgeable person) provides more useful information about the motif (yes, it is indeed theoretically useful). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 13:47, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Grand-Duc this is one of the Wat Arun corner shrines. It is shaped kind of like a diamond with these shrines on each end. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 17:19, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Immanuelle: thanks for the additional information! That IMHO makes a huge difference between simply stating a picture origin as "Bangkok" and having these explaining details. When I'm back home, I'll retract this DR (that would be a hassle to do it on my mobile phone). You could add the data in the information template meanwhile. Out of scope as "Files that add nothing educationally distinct to the collection of images we already hold covering the same subject, especially if they are of poor or mediocre quality." This still is blurry (possibly motion blur). Grand-Duc (talk) 10:14, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing there are probably better photos of this motif on Commons, but I believe it's your responsibility, as the one who nominated this photo for deletion, to link at least one. Because otherwise, you're asking people who'd evaluate your DR to do the work you should have done, which could be very time-consuming. Consider that if there are actually no other photos of this monument on Commons, we should keep this photo if Thailand has freedom of panorama or it's old enough to be public domain. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:25, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The official scope guideline does not mandate that bad images must be kept only because there is no replacement available. But in this case, there are actually better illustrations, see Giant Swing. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:33, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. And in view of the examples you gave,  Delete. By the way, I agree that some photos are of such poor quality that they'd be of no use even if they were the only images of a particular motif. It's just that my standards for that, especially keeping in mind that images are usually used online as thumbnails, are lower than yours. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:04, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This image has been uploaded from a National Weather Service web page, where it is attributed to a third party.

For many years, hosting such images on the Commons was done in good faith under the rationale that:

  • public submissions to the NWS all entered the public domain and/or
  • all files hosted on NWS websites were in the public domain unless they carried a formal copyright notice

An extensive review of this rationale in 2024 revealed that neither of these beliefs held up to scrutiny. These findings were confirmed in an RfC conducted from August to October 2024.

Per COM:ONUS it is the responsibility of the person uploading an image to the Commons or anyone arguing for its retention here to provide evidence of permission from the copyright holder. Nevertheless, I reached out to the creator named in the attribution at the source on October 27, but they never replied. (VRT ticket:2024112010006024)

Since this is an image created in the US after 1989 and is attributed to a creator eligible for copyright, this is a presumably unfree file and we must delete it as a precaution under COM:PRP.

This image has been uploaded from a National Weather Service web page, where it is attributed to a third party, who is an NWS employee. The wording of the attribution "picture submitted by [name], Mount Holly DAPM.(Surf's Up!)" creates significant doubt whether this photo was taken as part of the employee's official duties.

For many years, hosting such images on the Commons was done in good faith under the rationale that:

  • public submissions to the NWS all entered the public domain and/or

An extensive review of this rationale in 2024 revealed that neither of these beliefs held up to scrutiny. These findings were confirmed in an RfC conducted from August to October 2024.

As part of this review, I have investigated several images attributed, like this, personally to NWS employees, and in every case, the image has turned out to be the employee's personal property, to which they claim copyright. Although it is certainly possible that this image was created while on duty, it would be a highly unusual exception.

Per COM:ONUS it is the responsibility of the person uploading an image to the Commons or anyone arguing for its retention here to provide evidence of permission from the copyright holder. Nevertheless, I reached out to the NWS for clarification over the ownership of this image on October 31, but they never replied. (VRT ticket:2024112010006284)

Apologies for the lack of detail, this is quite an old upload from me. I am only aware from the sources that he was training in the UK in 1966 and around 14 August 1967. Pangalau (talk) 15:40, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Per the source (and Pangalau's comment), the photo would have to date to 1966 or 1967; however the source credits Kementerian Pertahanan (Ministry of Defense) for the photos. Per COM:NOP Indonesia, since a state agency distributed the photos, {{PD-IDGov}} could apply. I missed that this is from Brunei; {{PD-Brunei}} for government works requires 75 years from creation (or 50 years from first publication), which this wouldn't meet, unless the images were published around the time they were taken. If there is reason to believe a British military photographer took the photos, {{PD-UKGov}} could apply (assuming the photos were printed around the time they were taken). Not sure if there are any URAA concerns about possible US copyright issues. —Tcr25 (talk) 16:32, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree to the possibility that a British military personnel took this photograph in the UK. Which would fall under UK copyrights. Pangalau (talk) 04:21, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unused and unpolished (it says "Paris" twice) AI-generated logo, unclear whether "ePower Paris" even exists. Belbury (talk) 14:39, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Delete Agreed, but it would be best for you to say why as nominator. One thing I'd say is that although small size and problematic EXIF are not per se deletion reasons, photos this small are really unlikely to be uploaded by the photographer. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:07, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The uploader shared a screenshot of a chat with the supposed copyright holder via VRT which was not enough of a evidence. 1 week has passed since I asked them to follow the correct instructions but haven't received any response. Satdeep Gill (talk) 15:10, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
