- — Seward
Seward is the true main antagonist of Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls. He was the director of Elgos until he was later revealed to be Death in disguise.
History[]
Seward is the director of Elgos, an organization whose main objective is to guard Dracula's sealed material possessions, as well as the grimoires that contain the history of all heroes and battles that had been held against him throughout the years. He is shown to be continuously indebted to Lucy Westenra thanks to her involvement in restoring the information that Hermina destroyed when she departed to pursue her malevolent ambitions (later revealed to be actually heroic).
Based on comments by Hermina and Seward, Seward had very recently been promoted to director by the time she had gone absent, and this had the fortunate effect of not having him lose his rationality yet due to Death's role in leading the organization.
Quotes[]
- He was most likely summoned from the catalogue, by Hermina.
- Yes. She was once a truly exceptional mage of our organization.
- We could not have developed the method to enter grimoires were it not for her talents.
- Documentation on Shanoa's organization has only been discovered recently. Of all the grimoires we've compiled, this contains the newest era.
- We must stay on our toes. Hermina may interfere at any time.

Trivia[]
- He is likely named after John Seward, a character from the 1897 novel, Dracula, by Bram Stoker.
- John is the administrator of an insane asylum not far from Count Dracula's first English home, Carfax Abbey. This similarity may possibly extend to the fact of Seward being the director of Elgos, in the same vein the character from the novel was the administrator of the asylum.
- This is the second time where Death attempts to revive Dracula through taking the form of a human to deceive the main cast. The first time this happened was in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, where he took the form of Zead to deceive Hector. Furthermore, Seward is drawn with nearly identical facial features as Zead, although with blond, wavy hair.
