A Direct Attack and a Daunting Defense (Japanese: VS ヤブクロン・チラチーノ VS Trubbish & Cinccino), titled VS Trubbish / Cinccino in the Shogakukan Asia translation, is the 476th chapter of the Pokémon Adventures manga, and the 16th chapter of the Black & White arc.
It is subtitled Trubbish・Cinccino (Japanese: 疾風 Strong Wind) in the VIZ Media translation and Gale in the Shogakukan Asia translation.
Plot
While Black and White make their way through Pinwheel Forest, they are struck by a powerful wind carrying blade-like leaves. As the leaves tear holes through their clothes, Black catches a glimpse of a fast-moving silhouette. He is about to have Musha clear his mind to understand what he saw, but White hurries him out of the forest to avoid wasting any more time.
The two reach Skyarrow Bridge, which Black insists on crossing by foot. As they make their way across, Black stops to shake the mud and leaves off of himself. Immediately after, he is accosted by a Janitor, who yells at Black for dirtying the bridge after he had just cleaned it. Black tries to explain himself, but the Janitor claims he does not believe him. He challenges Black to a Pokémon battle, asserting it is the only way for the two to build mutual trust.
The Janitor, introducing himself as Geoff, sends out a Trubbish and Cinccino at Musha and Tula, respectively. As soon as Musha is exposed to Trubbish's scent, it re-enters its Poké Ball and refuses to exit. This forces Black to use Tep in its place. Tep is overwhelmed by the scent as well, allowing Trubbish to blast it with Acid Spray. While this is occurring, Tula struggles to damage Cinccino through the thick fur that makes up its scarf. Trubbish and Cinccino both use powerful attacks against their opponents, launching Tep into a garbage can and throwing Tula against the railing.
As Geoff begins to celebrate his victory, Tep rises from the garbage and charges into Trubbish, knocking it out. This prompts Black to reveal he had Tep only pretend to fall into the garbage in order to find something to plug its nose—a water bottle for each nostril. Geoff then looks up to see Tula, who had attached its webbing to the top of the bridge's pole during the distraction. Swinging from its web, Tula grabs Cinccino and launches it upward. The motion causes Cinccino's scarf to be cast aside, allowing Tula to knock it out with Slash.
With both of his Pokémon down, Janitor Geoff thanks Black for the battle. He tells him he had a feeling Black was a strong Trainer after realizing the tears on his clothes had likely been caused by an encounter with Virizion. He then gives Black his business card, revealing he is in actuality the president of the Castelia City Battle Company. After learning of the company's fame, White rushes over to promote the BW Agency to him.
Later, Black and White arrive in Castelia City. Eager to explore, White takes off running, leaving Black unable to keep up with her.
