Long Summary[]
Earlier on the same stormy night in Midland's capital of Wyndham, the dying King of Midland requests to see Princess Charlotte. The court doctor orders Owen to fetch her. As Owen passes through the King's court, he overhears nobles whispering about the King's imminent death and speculating that Charlotte will soon be made Queen. They suspect she will appoint a regent in her place. Owen hears them mention that Foss has not done anything notable since the Queen of Midland's assassination, stating he has seemingly been removed from power.
Disgusted by the self-centered nobles, especially with commoners succumbing to the plague throughout Wyndham, Owen walks away. At the end of the hall, he encounters Foss, who cryptically tells him, "The Falcon will come again."
As Owen rides across the main castle grounds, he recalls that following the shared dream of a glowing white falcon, priests proclaimed it a divine revelation from God.
When Owen reaches Charlotte's tower, her handmaidens prevent him from entering her room. They explain that Charlotte has barricaded herself in her room for the past five days and refuses to leave. She only allows Anna to enter. Inside, Charlotte clutches two lodestone figures of a lady and a knight while lying on her bed. Owen calls to her through the door, asking her to be with the King in his final moments, per his request. Charlotte begins to cry, refusing to go, stating she no longer considers the King her father.
Meanwhile, the King, delirious and feverish, envisions himself sitting on his throne in an open room under the sky. His breath is visible in the cold air, and he repeatedly commands for a fire to be lit, but each time, soldiers appear, guarding him from an unseen threat. He sees Charlotte before him, his source of warmth, and attempts to reach her, but the guards block his way. Suddenly, a glowing white falcon swoops down and envelops Charlotte in its wings. The falcon's head morphs into a faceless version of Griffith with only his long white hair and smile visible. Awestruck, the King wonders if he has been waiting for a savior like this falcon to free him from his metaphorical throne prison.
A deafening gong resonates throughout Wyndham, marking the King's passing. A weeping Charlotte pleads for Griffith to save her.
On the distant hills overlooking Wyndham, a massive foreign army of footsoldiers, mounted pikemen, siege towers, and armored elephants advances toward the city.
