House Slynt

The Citadel is in error about House Slynt's heraldry. The books never describe a checkered border, only a night-black field. The only time checkers have been mentioned are on the cloaks Janos and Morros wear, which do not suggest checkers are also on their shield - it's just a way to display the colors of their house. You are however right that Morros's personal coat of arms is non-existent. Potsk (talk) 21:13, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

I'm aware that the books don't mention the checkered border. I brought this issue up on the forum here and Ran very specifically said that the description on the Citadel came from GRRM and shows what the House Slynt coat of arms should look like. I assumed that since there's not really a contradiction, just an addition, if we go with what the Citadel shows, that's what should be shown here as well. --Alyx Rivers (talk) 21:47, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Infobox character

Hey Alyx, I reimplemented the name parameters in {{Infobox character}} while keeping it compatible with current usage. That means that, for now, nothing will change visually unless the new name parameters are used. The new parameters allow editors to specify the different parts of a character's name and display it in a nice format. We can also use this in the future for categorization according to first name, last name, etc. You can have a look at User:Abjiklam/sandbox2 for some examples of the name formats. If I missed a special case you can let me know and I'll check how I can deal with it.

I've also thought about how to deal with more than 2 COAs. I modified the Infobox such that it displays extra arms in another field under the title "Other arms". Abjiklam (talk) 19:51, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Hey! I was actually already watching your progress in the Recent Changes. ;) This looks incredibly impressive and I've already started experimenting with some pages. So, thanks a lot! I can currently not think of another special case, but if I come across one, I'll let you know.
About the Other arms, I think, this could work pretty well for Dunk and other people who had an extra sigil for a limited time only, like Tyrion's Hand coa, but I'm not sure if it works that well for women who married several times. Rohanne Webber would be the most extreme example I can think of. It might be a bit confusing if the coas of her birth house and her last husband's house are displayed at the top of the infobox, but her other husbands' sigils are further down.. -Alyx Rivers (talk) 20:08, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
I've answered your feedback here. Abjiklam (talk) 19:53, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

Correction

Thank you for fixing my mistakes behind me on the characters list project. This is a rather repetitive work, a mistake is easily made. --Thomaerys Velaryon (talk) 18:53, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

You're welcome! Though I'm none too sure I caught everything either, reading the list gets somewhat repetetive too, after a while. ;) What I definitely haven't corrected yet are some of the thumbnail errors, because I'm not entirely sure if we're waiting for a fix there or not. Specifically the Blackfyre, Banefort and the Locke coa aren't working. (I just realized Potsk fixed them already.) -Alyx Rivers (talk) 19:04, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

Category:Characters in alphabetical order

Hello Alyx, this category you created is redundant with "Category:Character pages in alphabetical order". I think we should delete it. What do you think ? --Thomaerys Velaryon (talk) 11:58, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Hey Thomaerys, you are right that this category makes the one I created a while back redundant. I have two problems with deleting mine. For one, Category:Character pages in alphabetical order is a hidden category, which means most people can't see it. Also, it sorts by page name, or DEFAULTSORT if that is in use. This means that the characters are not sorted by first name, as I think would make sense, but by a mixture of first name, last name and byname (like Fearless Ithoke). Abjiklam originally intended to make it possible to use the category to sort specifically by the first name given in the infobox - which might have been how the whole infobox overhaul started. But they never ended up implementing that, possibly because I up and vanished on you... which I'm sorry for, I had some RL problems.
So yeah, I wouldn't mind deleting my category if the other one was more accessible. --Alyx Rivers (talk) 13:41, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
That's ok and I can understand. I was just a bit perplexed with the redundancy but like you said the other category is hidden. The best would be to see what Abjiklam's take on it is before doing anything. --Thomaerys Velaryon (talk) 14:56, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
I'll admit, I had forgotten that hidden category existed.. But you're right that it makes no sense to use both. I'll hold off from adding mine to anymore pages for now. --Alyx Rivers (talk) 15:12, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
As Alyx mentionned, my intention is to use the name template to make a few categories, like "Characters by first name", "Characters by last name", "Characters known only by nickname", "Characters with an unknown name", etc. If you have ideas of categories you think would be useful we can add those too. Abjiklam (talk) 17:32, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
Those categories all sound good to me. There could maybe be another category: "Characters known only by title"... which would be for most High Septons and the legendary emperors from YiTi and such. My only question is whether characters without for example a first name would still turn up in the "Characters by first name" category under "*" or similar. And if not, should we have some sort of hold-all category that would encompass all existing characters, like I was going for with my "Characters in alphabetical order". Other than that, there's already a category "Unnamed characters" which would then probably end up being redundant. -Alyx Rivers (talk) 14:13, 26 May 2024 (UTC)
