Mystery knight
A mystery knight is a knight who competes in a tournament without revealing their identity.[1]
Culture
Mystery knights choose to conceal their names for a variety of reasons, and they may or may not reveal their identity later.[1] They are often popular with smallfolk.[2]
History
Jonquil Darke competed in the War for the White Cloaks as the Serpent in Scarlet.[3]
Prince Baelon Targaryen participated in the tourney at Old Oak as the Silver Fool.[4]
Prince Aemon Targaryen competed as the Knight of Tears in a tourney so he could name his sister, Naerys Targaryen, the tournament's queen of love and beauty.[1]
Ser Duncan the Tall competed as the Gallows Knight during the wedding tourney at Whitewalls.[2]
Ser Barristan Selmy competed as a mystery knight at the age of ten in a tourney at Blackhaven,[1] and he was knighted for again doing so at the age of sixteen in the winter tourney at King's Landing.[5] The Bastard of Uplands competed in the Oldtown tourney as Blackshield, but he was defeated and exposed by Barristan.[5]
Simon Toyne, the infamous leader of the Kingswood Brotherhood, competed in a tourney at Storm's End as a mystery knight.[6]
The Knight of the Laughing Tree participated in the tourney at Harrenhal in 281 AC. King Aerys II Targaryen tasked his son, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, with uncovering the mystery knight's identity, but all that was found was the knight's shield.[1]
