Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Halder is in the same class of recruits as Jon Snow, where his ability to fight with a sword is dismissed with disdain by Jon.[4] When Samwell Tarly arrives at Castle Black, Ser Alliser Thorne sends Halder to be his first practice partner. Alliser tells Halder to hurt Sam, but he is stopped by Jon's intervention. Alliser has Halder, Rast, and Albett attack Jon, but they are soundly defeated when Pypar and Grenn aid Jon.[1]
The recruits celebrate when Alliser believes them ready to man the Wall. When Pyp squirts a wineskin into Jon's face, Halder objects to the waste of the good sour red.[2] When Halder is named to the builders, he gives a stiff nod of approval.[6]
Halder helps Pate carve the wolf's head for the new pommel of Longclaw.[7]
Halder is among the group of friends who stop Jon from abandoning the Night's Watch and forswearing himself. Jon hides, hoping they will pass him by, but Halder is able to hear Jon's direwolf, Ghost.[8]
A Clash of Kings
Before Grenn leaves with the great ranging, Pyp, Todder, and Halder bring him to Mole's Town.[9]
A Storm of Swords
When Jon becomes distracted while training with Iron Emmett, Halder and Horse protect Emmett from Jon. Halder congratulates Jon after he is chosen as the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.[10]
A Feast for Crows
Halder is still stationed at Castle Black.[11]
A Dance with Dragons
Halder is one of the friends present in the new common hall in the cellar below the armory who try to invite Lord Commander Snow to sit with them, to no avail. Jon later decides to separate his friends and transfers Halder and Toad west to the Shadow Tower.[12]
Quotes by Halder
—Halder to Matthar
I helped Pate carve the stone for the pommel, and your friend Sam bought the garnets in Mole's Town.[7]
—Halder to Jon Snow
Halder: Do we have to bind your hands, or will you give us your word you'll ride back peaceful?
Jon: I won't run, if that's what you mean.[8]—Halder and Jon Snow
Quotes about Halder
Know your foe, Ser Rodrik had taught him once; Jon knew Halder, brutally strong but short of patience, with no taste for defense. Frustrate him, and he would leave himself open, as certain as sunset.[1]
