History[]
During Korra's childhood at the Southern Water Tribe compound, Master Yim met the Avatar after the White Lotus leader introduced her to him, as he was meant to become her firebending teacher. Already at their first meeting, Yim warned Korra that he was unlike any of her previous teachers, as he would not offer any grace due to her status as the Avatar, and that he would leave if she questioned his methods. When his new pupil brought up her wanting to attend the Glacier Spirits Festival week, Yim sternly informed Korra that he did not want to hear about any of this, stating that she needed to spend her time training instead.
Over the next days, Yim began to teach the Avatar, but to his growing frustration, she made little progress and the quality of her firebending even appeared to decline. He finally asked Korra what was distracting her so much, but when Korra began brought up the Glacier Spirits Festival in response, he angrily dismissed her. Concluding that the festival was affecting the Avatar's focus, he ordered her to go to her room and copy Avatar Szeto's theory of grain distributions until she could concentrate again.
Korra instead escaped from the compound to go the festival, but she was found by her father Tonraq, who took her back to her master. On a later day, Tonraq brought several children from Wolf Cove to the compound so that they could play weaver's ball with Korra. As Yim looked on in slight disapproval, the waterbending master told the firebender that he may be training the Avatar, but then addressed his daughter, adding that "you won't be a kid forever".[1]
Years later, in 170 AG, Yim oversaw Korra's firebending test, who demonstrate her prowess in the art before him, the Order of the White Lotus, and Katara, her waterbending master. After defeating three firebenders, Korra celebrated in front of the crowd, to which Yim warned her not to get ahead of herself as usual, as they had not yet decided whether she had passed the test.[2]
