"All that time on the island, plotting my return, I didn't realize how hard it would be. To reconnect with Mom, Thea, Laurel. Okay, I didn't... I didn't know how painful it would be to keep my secrets. You asked me to save the city. To right your wrongs. I will. I swear. But to do that, I can't be the Oliver that everyone wants me to be, which means that sometimes... to honor your wishes... I need to dishonor your memory. I'm sorry."

The Hood vs

The Hood v China White

It opens with Oliver Queen/Arrow recapping some of the pilot in voice-over. It cuts to Arrow beating up some guards and forcing a bad guy to make good.

Queen is to appear in court as part of legally coming back to life.

On his way into the courtroom Queen flashes back to the storm. He explains to the judge what happened, saying that for those five years on the island he felt he had to live for both he and his father. Queen's declaration of death is rescinded.

Queen runs into an angry Laurel outside the courtroom. Queen watches the press conference of a man being prosecuted by Laurel. Queen instantly gets free from his bodyguard Diggle.

We see Laurel give her opening statement against Martin Somers (Ty Olsson) who was smuggling drugs into the city by way of the Chinese Triads. In order to keep his illegal business going, Somers had a man named Victor killed. Laurel is arguing on behalf of Victor's daughter, Emily.

We learn that Somers' name was on his father's list. Cut to Arrow hanging Somers upside down, shooting arrows at him while demanding he confess to the murder.

Moira complains to Diggle about him continually losing her son. Queen walks in and she asks him where he runs off to when he escapes. Moira asks him to take Diggle with him on his next "rendezvous." Diggle tells Queen he'll quit if he's ditched one more time. Thea complains to Queen about him showing up after five years and judging her.

Somers doesn't want to tell Lance anything about his run-in with Arrow. Lance assures him he'll get his man and Somers makes a threat towards Laurel.

Queen gets a tour of the family business. Moira and Walter Steele (Colin Salmon) would like to name a new building after his father and ask him to take a leadership position in the company. Queen seems to have no interest in working for the company and makes a crack about Walter being married to his mother.

Diggle talks to Queen about family and this flashes Queen back to first landing on the island. His father's corpse washes up and he carries the body away from the birds.

Lance drops by Laurel's office and telling her she and Emily are getting 24/7 protective custody. She initially declines, but he says he's just doing his job.

Somers speaks with a female representative of the Triads. She seems to think killing Laurel would be a good idea.

Thea asks Queen about his scars. He says he's not ready to talk about what happened to him there. She takes him out back and shows him his tombstone. She says while he was gone she'd ask him for advice. But now that's he's back she feels less connected to him than she did when he was missing. She asks him to let her in.

Queen drops by Laurel's place. He says he initially blew her off to protect her, but now realizes that he hurt her. He tells her about not wanting to work for the company and his mother seeming not to accept his answer. She says her father blames himself more than he does Queen. Queen hears something and pulls her out just before somebody starts shooting. It's the Triads and Diggle saves the day just before Queen and Laurel are killed. The woman we saw meeting with Somers is also there, but she manages to escape. Lance arrives and thanks Diggle. He then tells Queen to stay away from his daughter.

Diggle noticed that Queen was able to help him by throwing an unbalanced kitchen knife ten feet across the room. Queen tries to brush it off as luck, but Diggle knows better.

Queen gets into his Arrow gear and prepared to go after Somers. Arrow arrives just as Somers is preparing to leave town.

Lance wants Laurel to recuse herself from the case. She won't do it. Lance gets a call about something happening at the docks.

Cut to Arrow fighting his way to Somers. He gets Somers to admit he ordered the Triads to kill Victor. A female member of the Triad, China White (Kelly Hu), shows up and a huge martial arts battle with Arrow ensues. The police show up and Lance has Arrow in his sights. But he shoots an arrow at Lance's arm, knocking the gun away but not harming him. Attached to the arrow is a digital recording of Somers' confession.

Queen decides he needs to be the person everybody thinks he is in order to fulfill his promise to his father.

Cut to Walter beginning the dedication. Queen shows up, seemingly drunk. He grabs the microphone and creates a scene. He says he's not half the man his father was and to "stop asking me to be."

Somers is headed to jail. Lance stops by to see Laurel. He's still not happy with Arrow, calling him an anarchist.

Queen crosses Somers' name off his father's list. He then flashes back to bringing his father's body to a rock. Inside his father's pocket his finds a blank journal with a circular logo on the front page.

Moira meets with somebody in the rear of a limousine, telling them that her son has no clue about what is actually going on or that the yacht was actually sabotaged. The person is holding something with the same circular logo.

Queen goes to his father's gravestone. He talks about how hard its been to reconnect and keep his secrets. He reaffirms his pledge to right his father's wrongs, but tells him that to do so he'll have to dishonor his memory. As he leaves, some workers move in to dismantle his headstone.

Back to the island flashback. As he is finishing burying his father under some rocks, Queen is hit in the right shoulder by an arrow. He looks back and sees a person wearing a hood, notching another arrow and preparing to fire at him again as he passed out.

Goofs[]

  • When Oliver apologizes to John Diggle in the Queen Mansion, a microphone can be seen briefly hanging over Diggle as he first responds.
  • On Netflix the captions mistakenly spell “Sara” as “Sarah”.
  • When Oliver takes his hood off in the scene before he speaks at the Applied Sciences opening, the footage is played in reverse and he blinks in a very strange way.
  • The man who shoots Oliver with a bow at the end of the episode is clean-shaven and generally looks very different from who it is shown to be in the next episode, Yao Fei Gulong.
