The Falcone Crime Family was the ruling mafia crime family of Gotham City. Led by there don, Carmine Falcone. They ruled the city for many years, until they were dethroned by the numerous costumed "freaks” and vigilantes.
History[]
America's oldest surviving organized crime family, the Falcone Mob is currently run by Carmine "The Roman" Falcone, an infamous mob boss in Gotham City. Notable members included his sister Carla Viti, his children, Sofia, Kitrina, and Alberto, his nephews Johnny and Sonny Viti, and his niece Lucia Viti.
The Falcone's tended to avoid high profile super-criminality (viewing such people as freaks), preferred to keep to themselves, and ran more traditional criminal rackets such as blackmail, bribery, drug trafficking, arms dealing, and protection rackets.
The Falcone's also had a large presence in Gotham City's shipping industry which was used as a front for their illegal activities: Gotham was covered in signs that advertised, "Falcone Warehousing and Storage", and "Falcone Shipping".
Despite their public disdain for the "Insane Freaks", the Falcones, hypocritically, maintained under the table dealings with such "Freaks" like the notorious Calendar Man and Catwoman (although the business with Catwoman and Calender Man reportedly ended in a mess). Worse, Alberto Falcone, the son of the godfather, was reputedly suffering from a mental illness himself.

Before Arkham Origins Incident[]
Alberto Falco was known as the first to arrive in America, bringing along his family with him from Italy. There he promptly changed his name to Al Falcone, and became known for being a cold-blooded butcher of men. At some point his son Vincent Falcone took over, having a better grasp of America's criminal landscape. In time, Vincent's son Carmine Falcone would take over and serve to improve his father's grip on crime. The Family also had a long time rivalry with the Maroni Crime Family, led by Luigi Maroni, and later his son Salvatore Maroni.
For over a century, the Falcones held absolute power in the Gotham Underworld, but they eventually began to loose ground as the first "super-criminals" began appearing and masked vigilantes soon followed them. Batman started to interfere with both Falcone and Black Mask's operations all around Gotham.
Arkham Origins Incident[]
During the hunt for Batman, that was orchestrated by an independent mobster called Black Mask, the Falcones found themselves suddenly being pushed out of the weapons smuggling racket by a new player in Gotham's Underworld, with Alberto ended up in the clutches of that man: Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, who was known as the Penguin. Alberto would later be released, on the condition that the Falcones would exit the weapons trade.
Cold, Cold Heart Incident[]
As the Penguin continued to smuggle weapons in the following years, and only grew in wealth and influence in the city's underworld, it's assumed that the Falcones lost the gang war with Penguin (who had Mr. Freeze designing weapons for him during the crisis) and were indeed forced out of the weapons trade.
Between Arkham Origins and Arkham Shadow Incident[]
Eventually, the Mafia lost so much influence and prestige. that the Family Don was arrested in May and prosecuted by Harvey Dent, the District Attorney of Gotham City, with Penguin turning states evidence against Falcone. An act that would have been unthinkable in previous years.
Carmine's trial presumably collapsed after that as he was still a free man years later.
Arkham Shadow Incident[]
The Falcones controlled Blackgate Prison, paying off guards and inmates to control the flow of contraband. However, during Carmine's time in Blackgate, the family's influence came under further threat, when TYGER, led by C.O. Lyle Bolton, attacked Carmine in the prison chapel. However, share prices in Falcone Shipping rose, with acting CEO Alberto publicly stating that "investors know that, like my father, our company is strong enough to bounce back from anything". The company also continued to plan worldwide operations in the next fiscal year.
Bolton later openly declared the Family to no longer be in control of the prison and began beating Carmine savagely in full view of inmates, daring anyone to try and stand up for Carmine. Nobody did, until Irving "Matches" Malone stepped up.
From that point on, Carmine treated Malone as his most trusted friend, showering him with gifts and favors, and entrusting him with his most sensitive tasks. This proved to be his undoing when he shared with Malone the secret that he held blackmail material on a slew of political and legal officials in the maximum security wing, instructing Malone to release the material if anything should happen to him. Malone, who was actually Batman in disguise, gave this information to the first honest Blackgate guard he found.
Arkham Asylum Incident[]
During the Arkham Asylum Riots, Carmine had since been released from Blackgate, and the Falcones remained neutral, and preferred to let the freaks kill themselves while they sat back and watched.
Between Arkham Asylum and Arkham City Incident[]
Following the Arkham Asylum Riots, the Falcones became embroiled in another turf war with the Maroni Crime Family. Fighting for their very lives, the Falcones murdered countless people and burned buildings to the ground.
At some point, The Falcones went through another terrible situation when a mysterious killer began murdering members and associates of the family on Holidays. Starting with Carmine's nephew Johnny, who was killed on Halloween. Next, the Sullivan Family, a group of Irish hitmen, were killed at a club on thanksgiving. The situation was eventually resolved by Batman, but it still dealt a major blow to the family's power in Gotham.
Later on, following the election of Mayor Quincy Sharp, the Falcones finally faced something that they had never encountered before, a politician who would not take their bribes, nor was he afraid of their threats. As the Mayor moved to close down their business, both legal and illegal, the Falcone Family, afraid of the construction of Arkham City and the possibility of being incarcerated there, decided to leave Gotham.
Before they left though, the Falcone Family settled accounts with the Maroni Family: the Falcones killed dozens of the Maronis in an ambush at their Italian restaurant before they left the survivors of the massacre to be arrested and imprisoned in Arkham City while they made a clean getaway to the relative safety of Blüdhaven.
Arkham City Incident[]
The absence of The Falcone Crime Family created a power vacuum in Gotham City which other independent crime lords began vying to fill leading to violent clashes and gang wars. That would later play into the hands of Hugo Strange who delighted in ratcheting up the violence as part of his plan.
However, the mob still kept some cards close to their chest. It's implied that the Falcone Family had Scarecrow (himself presumed dead) working for them as an inside man in Arkham City, and provided him a boat to use as a temporary base.
Meanwhile, the Joker Gang was known to have seized the Falcone Shipping Yard and used it as a holding area to store Nora Fries' frozen body. Batman later attacked the Yard and arranged for Fries' safe transport back to her husband.
Arkham Knight Incident[]
The Falcones remained in Blüdhaven, however they continued to operate their still active legitimate businesses in Gotham, such as Falcone Shipping on Bleake Island.

Trivia[]
- In Arkham Shadow, Falcone tells Malone that he is on his way to "being made”, which is when you become an official member of a mafia family. However, given the criminal identity of Malone is not Italian, this implies the Falcone Family does not follow real life mafia rules, as you can only become a made man if you are Italian.
