Sergeant Bauer is the main antagonist of the 1990 film Dances with Wolves.
Role[]
When Dunbar was captured by the Union Soldiers as they mistook him for an Indian after killing his horse, Cisco, Bauer and Corporal Spivey chain him up and guard him. Bauer tells Spivey to get the Major and he taunts Dunbar. When the Major arrives with Lt. Elgin, Bauer interrogates Dunbar and he reveals that he speaks English. The Major asks him why he's dressed in a Sioux outfit and he tells him that he was sent from Fort Hayes. Elgin asks for proof and Dunbar tells them about his orders in his journal. They search for it and Bauer taunts Dunbar. They return without any proof. The soldiers take him outside and one of them orders Dunbar to keep his eyes front. Dunbar retaliates by tackling the soldier to the ground, but is knocked out.
Dunbar is taken back in shackles and the Major offers him to guide them to the Indian camps, but he tells them that there are no hostiles. Elgin asks Dunbar if he will cooperate, but Dunbar responds that he will not talk to them in Lakota, shocking the other soldiers. Elgin orders Bauer to take Dunbar down to the pond to clean his face and declines Spivey to come. It turns out that Spivey stole the journal for himself as he watches Dunbar and uses it as toilet paper with Corporal Edwards. Spivey comes back to feed Dunbar and tries to steal his pendant, but Dunbar detains him and calls for Bauer. Bauer comes up and taunts Dunbar, but he kicks the bowl towards him. Spivey charges at Dunbar, but Bauer stops him and declares that they will hang him back at Fort Hayes.
The soldiers put Dunbar on a wagon and head out on their journey back to Fort Hayes. The soldiers notice Two Socks following them and shoot at him. Dunbar wakes up and attacks Spivey in defense, but Bauer hits him. The soldiers continue shooting at Two Socks until Edwards manages to mortally wound him. Edwards gets off the wagon and Spivey proceeds to kick Dunbar until Elgin stops him and threatens to arrest him. Elgin stops Edwards and it is revealed that the wolf sacrificed himself as the Sioux are waiting on the other side of the hill.
They stop at a river to check for ambushes as Spivey and Edwards taunt Dunbar. One of the soldiers informs Elgin and they cross the river. However, they are suddenly attacked by the Sioux and Elgin is killed. Bauer, Spivey and Edwards attempt to intervene, but Dunbar knocks them off the wagon and strangles Spivey with his shackles. The Sioux manage to defeat the soldiers and Edwards cries for Bauer to come to his aid as he is pummeled by the Indians, but he runs away in fear. As the Sioux shout in victory, Bauer comes across Smiles A Lot with his horse and pulls out his gun to shoot him, but it misfires. Bauer strikes Smiles A Lot and tries to untie his horses until he gets distracted by Wind In His Hair. He tries to flee, but Smiles A Lot impales him in the chest with his axe, killing him.
