“ | I'm sure glad I found you. Mom always said we needed a dog to get rid of our table scraps. | „ |
~ Clara. |
Clara is the main antagonist of the 1972 Peanuts film Snoopy, Come Home. She is an abusive girl who happens to look like Marcie, only she doesn't wear glasses.
She’s also an unintentional villain in the fact her crazed affection for animals leads her to kidnapped Snoopy and Woodstock to keep as pets (often against their will), as she has no clue how to look after them and as such often causes them more suffering than good.
She is voiced by Linda Ercoli.
Biography[]
Clara is first seen digging a hole in the garden when Snoopy and Woodstock walk towards her to get directions to the hospital Lila is in. She then strangles Snoopy and kidnaps him to her home to ask her mother for permission to keep him. I thought Snoopy was a stray dog. With her mother's permission, Clara tied him to her garden fence with a thick rope. Later, Clara kidnaps Woodstock, thinking he is a lost bird, and asks permission to keep him as well.
She then calls Snoopy (whom she thinks is a "sheepdog") "Rex", takes him to the bathroom, and then dresses him up for a tea party. When she pours too much tea into his cup, it spills on the tea table and Snoopy's clothes. She blames him for getting his clothes dirty (even though it's her fault, not Snoopy's) and abusively spanks him. She yells at him for trying to kick down the door and stops him from making a recuse call on the phone.
She scolds Snoopy for causing a scene and tells her that if she wants to keep him, her mother says she should take him to the vet and give him a shot. On the way, Clara pulls him over and tells him that her mother is happy that she found him and that he will be perfect for cleaning up the scraps on the table. When they reach the vet, Snoopy manages to escape while she is being attacked by the other dogs.
As he tries to save Woodstock, Clara comes home and follows him around the house with the leash. At one point, she bumps her head on the bedroom dresser when the two animals hid inside one of its drawers. They encounter each other in the bathroom, and as she chases after them, she manages to grab and nearly began to strangle Snoopy to near asphyxiation as he desperately tries to escape her grasp by pulling up the piano rug with the fishbowl on it. A fishbowl falls on her head and covers it, obscuring her vision, but the fish still swims through it, allowing Snoopy and Woodstock to escape her house.
Her fate after this scene is unknown. Some viewers believe that she may have been drowning for a long time with a fishbowl on her head, as he was never seen again. Others think that either her mother took the fishbowl from his head.
Trivia[]
- She, alongside the Red Baron and his Flying Circus and the Camp Bullies, is one of the only characters in The Peanuts to be an actual villain, because other antagonists are either mere bullies, jerks, or scammers.
- Clara's behavior may have been the inspiration for Elmyra Duff's form Tiny Toon Adventures series.
