Personality
Below is a brief description of the smug personality. For more information, click here. |
Smug villagers are very polite, kind, and gentleman-like. As a smug villager, Raymond will get along easily with other villagers. Smug villagers get along well with most villagers, their personality appearing to be a mix of the other personality types. Smug villagers will stroke their egos from time to time, going on about how cool they are.
Generally, Raymond will get along with lazy, normal, snooty, and peppy villagers, and may conflict with cranky villagers.
House
In New Horizons, Raymond has an office-themed home. From the Office set, he has a modern office chair and an office desk. The office desk has a document stack and a black desktop computer. In the middle of his house, he has a den desk with a mug and a Newton's cradle, and a den chair from the Den Set. In the back of his house, there's a whiteboard, safe, water cooler, and an iron worktable with a fax machine and document stack on top of it. On the back wall, there's a wall clock and formal paper. For wallpaper, he uses the Office Wall and for flooring, he uses the Monochromatic Tile Flooring.

Raymond was added to Pocket Camp in the March 20, 2020 update.
Raymond's preferred theme is civic, and he primarily gives wood as a reward. His profile reads:

Trivia
- Raymond appears to have complete heterochromia, where one eye is a different color than the other. His left eye is green while his right eye is brown. Contrary to popular belief, he isn't the first villager to have this trait, but the third; the first villager with complete heterochromia was Hugh, who was introduced in Animal Crossing. The second villager with complete heterochromia was Tasha, who was introduced in Dōbutsu no Mori e+.
- Raymond is one of the eight new villagers that came with New Horizons's release, along with Judy, Audie, Megan, Reneigh, Sherb, Cyd, and Dom.
- He, along with the other New Horizons newcomers, was added to Pocket Camp in an update that was released at the same time as the release of New Horizons.
- He is the first and only smug cat villager as of New Horizons.
- He, along with Curlos, Ed, Kidd, Cephalobot, and O'Hare are currently the only smug villagers that wave with both arms.
- Different meanings can be found in Raymond's international names:
- His English, Dutch, and Russian name, Raymond (RUS: Реймонд), derives from the Germanic language, either from the names Raginmund or Hraidmund. In Old German, mund originally meant "hand", but came to mean "protection"; when added with O.Ge. regin "counsel" or hraid "fame", the names Raginmund "counsel protector" or Hraidmund "famous protector" were made.
- Raymond's name may be a play on Raymond James Financial. This is further reinforced by his initial clothing and home décor, giving him the appearance of a financial consultant. The name James is also a theorized origin of the name Jack (see Japanese name).
- Raymond is the first villager whose name was revealed by third-party social media -- it was revealed by crossingchannel, who contributed to the game's official guide book.[2]
- His Italian name, Raimondo, is an uncommon Romantic spelling of Raymond.
- His Japanese, Korean, and Chinese names, (JPN: ジャック (Jakku?); KOR: (잭슨 Jaegseun); CHN: (simp. 杰克, trad. 傑克 Jiékè)), are transliterated forms of the name English Jack, a derivitive of John, James, or Jacob (all meaning "supplanter" or "graced by God"). The origin of the Chinese transliteration, Jackie, is a unisex variant of Jack with the deminutive -ie suffix, while for the Korean transliteration, Jackson, literally means "son of Jack".
- The Han characters of his Chinese name have individual meanings:
- 杰 jié (simplified Mandarin) is commonly used in transliterations of foreign given names with /d͡ʒ/ sounds. Additionally in Cantonese Chinese, it can be used to mean "thick, viscous".
- 傑 jié (traditional Mandarin) means "outstanding", "remarkable", or even "heroic". It is also used as a surname.
- 克 kè can mean many thing from "to be compitent"; "to finish, complete"; "to defeat, win"; or "to restrain". It can also refer to the metric measurement gram or the Tibetan unit khal (ཁལ).
- His Chinese name may be in reference to high-profile Hong Kong-born actors: either famed martial artist "Jackie Chan" (b. 1954, real name 房仕龍 Fáng Shìlóng) or singer-songwriter Jacky Cheung Hok-yau (b. 1961).
- The Han characters of his Chinese name have individual meanings:
- His Spanish name, Narciso, is the translation of Narcissus (Ancient Greek: Νάρκισσος), both as the name of the taxonomic genus of daffodils and a Boetian hunter of Greek mythology. In Greek myth, Narcissus was a man who (after rejecting the affection of the mountain nymph Echo) was cursed by the goddess Nemesis into falling in love with his reflection until his death, upon which the first daffodil sprouted. This etymological origin for the flower genus Narcissus and the self-centered personality trait narcissism ties into both his nature hobby and his smug personality.
- His German name, Gunnar, is a Nordic name cognate with the German Günther and English Gunter that means "fighter, soldier, attacker". Since Raymond has heterochromia and wears glasses, it may also be a reference to the eyewear company Gunnar Optiks (however this is unlikely, as the company does not operate in Germany).
- Different meanings can also be found in Raymond's international catchphrases, several of which reference his needs for precision, as stated in his Pocket Camp description.
- His English phrase, crisp, can be used as an adjective to convey something to be "sharp, clearly defined" or an act to be "brief and to the point".
- His Japanese phrase, キリッ kiri, means "to be neat and tidy" i.e. "crisp".
- His French phrase, panache, means "plumage" but can just figuratively mean "flamboyance".
- His Spanish phrase, atilda, is the third-person singular of the verb atildar, meaning "to clean up, to tidy".
- His German phrase, weeßte, "you know" is typical of the Berlin accent, "Berlinerisch", which may reference one of his sentences in the German version of New Horizons, stating he was only used to big cities before coming to the player's island.
- His Italian phrase, rrricooo, seems to be a trilled drawl of the adjective ricco "rich (in wealth, beauty, or quality)".
- His Dutch phrase, netjes, is an adjective meaning "neat, tidy", that can also be used as an interjection meaning "nice!"
- His Russian phrase, стильненько (stil`nen`ko), derives from стильный (stílʹnyj "stylish").
- His Korean phrase, 우쭐 ujjul, is equivalent to the interjection "wow".
- His Chinese phrase, 严肃/嚴肅 yánsù, means "serious, solemn, earnest".
- Raymond quickly became one of the most popular villagers introduced in New Horizons, to the point that fans became infamous by hunting day and night for him, as well as trading him for high amounts of Bells, Nook Miles Tickets, or even real-life money. The latter was discouraged by Nintendo. This popularity also spawned memes about putting him in the Maid dress or referencing the American TV sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond (1996-2005). A hacker later on gave 30 Raymonds for free to people.[3]
- In the Animal Crossing Pocket Camp Pocket Poll, Raymond won three categories, tying with Goldie for the most wins. Also like Goldie, he gave the runner-up villager (Marshal) the mic for the third speech.
- He shares his birthday with the cranky gorilla Boyd. Both of them have birthdays on October 1.
- In New Horizons, Raymond's preferred styles are Cool/Elegant, and his preferred colors are Black/Gray.
