This is a great film that surprised me completely. I usually follow all Eastwood films, this one I missed in theaters and was barely aware of.
It takes the usual courtroom drama in a jury trial and turns its on his head. There are no possible spoilers here, no question about guilt. That is immediately obvious. The issue is what the main characters does with that information, as he wrestles with justice in its many colors (for himself, his family, the victim, the accused) and how they never seem to align. The moral dilemma is crushing and Nicholas Hoult does a GREAT job at conveying his characters struggles in a way that is sympathetic without being condescending or fully supportive. Constantly making you ask what YOU would have done in his place. He is appropriately slippery with his moral compass and, although this is not the usual character for that, should be considered for awards.
The supporting cast is awesome, even with just bit parts. Great script, great directing, great acting, great film. That lingers in the best possible (or worst possible?) way.
