NYPD Blue (1993)
2 Stars Because of its obvious sexism
Having lived overseas for most of these years, it is only now in 2024 that I'm binge watching the show. Generally speaking it's very good. Love the cast! Love the scripts! Love the twists and turns and the various subjects that come up. How the characters interact. Love it. I was so glad David Caruso left he's my least favorite member of the ensemble cast. He's not a great actor he's always the same and his poses are awkward he was greedy and he lost out while the series only became better
But there is yet another problem It really is deep in its heart completely misogynist, sexist, insulting. The women area heterosexual and involved with men. Gay men are fine, even loved. Even the hard nose Andy who we can love and hate, can be kind yet most of the time annoying, has issues with gay men, but gay women? Wow!!! One obvious gay woman treated with such stupid obvious bias. Seriously!!! It's enough to demand the entire series be tossed in the garbage. So unnecessary too.
Spooks (2002)
British TV is simply the best
The series maybe seemingly old but its story lines are as fresh today as they were first written. The Brits are simply the best at television series. The scripts are witty the dialogue keeps you in your ties, its action packed and leads you in different directions and rarely very rarely can you guess the episodes end plot. Ass to the scripts and keeping it upfront with same situations today as 20 years ago is the cast. They could not be more brilliant more attuned to what they do and say and their "back story." The cast changes and just as you begin to get wrapped up in who you like more the cast changes and it's done with ease and superb replacements. In fact rather than being a detriment it adds to the excitement of learning about new characters. The setting and scenery the "big scenes" are all crafted with excellence and I love the soundtrack which highlights the intensity and drama. Yes I binged out and watch them all one after another and will most likely do it again within the next six months.
Me Familia 2 (2021)
Strange, weird, bizarre, and I loved it
I confess I love mafia films. And this one is just amazing. There is something hauntingly authentic to the conversations, the dialogues - unforced, not sure if they even rehearsed it, spontaneous, very natural. The movie weaves in and out of scenes and like a puzzle the pieces do eventually do come together. There are many characters and we sometimes hear about them before we see them and then we find out who is loyal to whom. Bad guys good guys, loved them all. Yes it's about family and family ties and betrayal. I loved the cinematography. At times deeply graphic at times penetratingly poetic and beautiful. The music too adds a wonderful dimension to the quality of the characters and the wild story line. I don't want to give anything away - you have never seen a mafia movie quite like this one. And yes I'm going to watch it again very soon because I'm sure I missed a lot.....just be warned it is strange, weird and bizarre.
A Murder of Innocence (2018)
Too Bad
A true story, obviously religious based, but the acting is so bad, especially the lead roles - how could the producers and the director allow that? Probably family or close friends. They did this on a tight budget but still....there are plenty of actors who would love to participate in a low budget film - but seriously the role of the pastor - he is so bad! It is embarrassing. And then there's the script - did anyone re-read it to leave out the obvious silliness and amateurishness...if the script was tightened and the lead roles cast properly it would have been a much better film...and then there is this one...why do scripts insist on someone throwing up? Is this really necessary? I wish someone with talent had produced this film because it is interesting, but so wishy washy silliness....
Above Suspicion (2000)
I enjoy this film
Not sure why so many negative reviews. Good solid film love the cast and the intrigue. The story keeps moving with twists and turns. Can't find anything really wrong with it. And delighted it's on YouTube. By the way - YouTube is filled with many good even great and yes enjoyable feature films tv films and series. This is one of them. Want to sit back with pizza or popcorn and enjoy a solid film. One of the enjoyable aspects is the familiarity with many of the actors. Like old friends brought together!!! Story develops well good script and the acting is top notch ... highly recommended !!! Enjoy.
Soap (1977)
A Masterpiece, what a pity it ended so abruptly
Susan Harris and her team are geniuses!!! Simple.
Genius. How within doubt 23 minutes each episode is filled with laughter, silliness, to the tragic. All the range of emotions the pen will write. Meantime the cast is more than brilliant.
Wow!!! Talk about how elements come together to reach a television perfection.
More than just controversial taking into consideration when the show was produced and televised - even today the show continues to be 'edgy.' Touching upon subjects that many still have problems with.
It can never be repeated. It can never be recreated.
Too many of the cast members have sadly passed away.
They were absolutely perfect in their roles.
It all starts with the script....
Thank you to the Susan Harris team, to ABC for having the courage to broadcast the show. To the sponsors who supported it.
Just a pity it ended so abruptly.
South Pacific (1958)
It's okay but lacks the strength
Of Mary Martin ! Sorry Mitzi you didn't make it !!! And John Kerr too was far to weak and his voice over singing voice also very weak. I like long movies so the length isn't a problem and the extra script and the action of the war is okay even though it's a bit weak too. What is really important is that the highlights those moments which were so moving and touching in the broadway production just don't work ! They are too weak. Pity since I love Rodgers and Hammerstein ! And the acting in most cases is very weak even a bit silly. Ray Walston is always wonderful !!! The love story just doesn't ring true.
Testament: The Story of Moses (2024)
From the very beginning this is a travesty
Seriously? The information from the very beginning is off - not just off but incomplete - not only incomplete but ridiculous. The haircuts of the slaves, the stern faces of the Egyptians. It is a typical awful ridiculous badly created, badly carved almost funny, but Monty Python would have done more justice than this series. Oh dear! The acting is as bad as the script which is completely off course. Trying to be oh so politically correct, its a mixture of nonsense. Let's start at the very beginning of Moses - who is his mother? Who is the mother of not only Moses but Aaron and Miriam? Did you not remember the important of Jochebed and how the mother of Moses actually nursed him in the home of the Pharaoh? PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS!!!
Killing Eve (2018)
WOW
Simply one of the best of the British television series. And it is constantly amazing, never know where the scripts will take you. As absurd as it may sound this dark and violent and strange series is simply fantastic and not be missed. From the soundtrack which is a protagonist to the cinematography - everything works. And the cast the cast the cast - perfect! Everyone is marvelous in their role. And top it off with it being a heavy female cast with many of these fine British actresses over the age of 50! It is slick, it is well crafted. The scripts, the dialogue wonderful. And everything is simply matter of fact - there are no 'oh no' moments concerning the characters traits or personality. Add to all of this wonder Jodie Comer who is simply one of the finest of the finest actresses today and yesterday. Who work in this series labels her one of the top ten actresses of all time. This is not to deny the work of Sandra Oh who is perfect or Fiona Shaw and all the men!! I don't want to say anything that would give away the story line - what I do suggest is - don't read too much about it - turn off the phone, computers and just binge out. Bravo Brava to a mysteriously weird and dark and wonderful piece of entertainment.
Voleuses (2023)
Leave it to French women to make an interesting
Buddy film which is actually a love story. Funny sad action pact and yea violent - the French can be so freein their expression of friendship and love. Congratulations to Melanie Laurent for a fine job of acting and directing. Her warmth and humor are threads that bind the story and bring life to all the protagonists. Interweaving crime as a way of life and the trust between Alex and Carole is the backbone of this serious comedy. The pace the rhythm the music )interesting music choices) the locations the tenderness - just makes for an even more complex film. There is a sense of freedom that the women portray even with a certain hesitancy in not crossing any line. I think that's more to appease producers. Not to be missed.
Maestro (2023)
Almost a travesty and it makes me sad
I really wanted to love the film. I love Lenny, I grew up with the young people's concerts, with his Broadway musicals, his amazing working collaboration with Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurent, Comden and Green.
I grew up knowing of his love for Israel, his love of religion, his spiritual relationship to God - always found in his quotes and passion.
This is a love story without passion, a love story that doesn't make any sense. A love story that falls flat! It's the fault of the script not the acting. It is a fault in the direction.
So much could have been done to surround and strengthen the love story but it just doesn't work. Even with the Spielberg and Scorse producing - it's another failed Netflix flop
Yes wonderful to see the acting skills of Brad Cooper the great make up, the change of life, and congratulations on that. There are even moments when you can feel how Brad is channeling Lenny, but it isn't enough, there aren't enough of those moments. Carey Mulligan does a good job, but a bit miscast.
And who's who in this story? It isn't clear and what music is being played - never indicated. And what years are we in, that too not indicated.
Lenny deserved better than this - he really did.
We know he loved the boys but he loved his family, his music and he loved God even more! And you completely ignored that.
The Ruth Rendell Mysteries: The Veiled One (1989)
Fascinating and wickedly weird
This is a very strange and interesting episode. It's wonderful and weird. This is not your run of the mill (but great) Wexford adaptation for television. Don't read too much about it just sit back and enjoy. The Brits are singularly the best when it comes to murder mysteries and adaptations from novels. This is a gem within the series. It starts out as an ominous episode. The music soundtrack works perfectly. This is a mixture of Alfred Hitchcock and surreal artistry - the wrong and execution of this is marvelous. This series goes back to late 1980s for several years...never out of date - so glad it's on YouTube!!! Acting is fine script perfect !!! Loved it.
Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso (2023)
GOOD SOLID DOCUMENTARY,
Hard to write about this without giving information about the film. Justice system in a Muslim run semi-dictatorship with the police and Justice system completely powerful, always interested in seeking and providing 'guilty' verdicts.
Islam today is unquestionably misogynist. Indonesia is today unquestionably misogynist.
May I suggest you watch the entire documentary - don't miss a word the translation because most of it is in subtitles.
Watch how the court worked with and without evidence, the testimonies of experts that will floor you for sure....
Personally I'm convinced the father of the murdered young woman has deep connections with the judges - yes I'll even say bribed...and the treatment of Jessica after the verdict is equally as horrendous.
Something is very wrong
Congratulations to the brave film makers.
Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn (2023)
Fascinating well done
Keeps you wanting more information keeps the suspense. Not sure in which direction the movie will take and it's jam packed with facts. I loved it! Back and forth here and there. The devotion of his wife, found that very moving.
It's a good solid doc series. Great editing that enables the suspense.
I am not familiar with the story of either Nissan or Renault.so this series was a learning curve for me.
The unfolding of how the escape idea was hatched to its flawless execution is riveting
Juxtaposition of interviews opinions fron many reporters who followed the story IDF Nissan and Renault is interesting
One last comment learned a lot about Japanese judicial system and it's frightening.
Harley & Katya (2022)
Devastatingly Brilliant
I love ice skating, I love the competitions, I love the couples and the dance partners. So I have a certain prejudice in loving this brilliantly crafted documentary film.
Well researched, well investigated, delving into interviews, the life of young children who have a passion, a huge passion where their entire life is devoted to one thing.
In this case it is a sport. And the drive, the ecstasy of the accomplishments met with the difficulties of the mistakes and failures, the learning curve.
The idea that we don't take care of your children in their bountiful desire to express themselves be it in sport or art or or or - where funding is an issue and money an obstacle.
I don't want to say anything more about this. I suggest if you don't know anything about their story - then just watch the film without too much pre-research.
Bless those who helped Harley and Katya and who worked with them through the good times and difficult times.
Bring a box of tissues to your screening.
El caso Alcàsser (2019)
Intense Terribly Sad Well Investigated
I applaud the director editor the crew behind this story and the amount of research that they accomplished.
Spanish is not a language I know so I'm relying on the subtitles that seem pretty good...
The film moves back and forth both in time and the layering of information. It does not expose all the facts immediately.
This demands my complete and absolute attention and I could not drift away or divert my eyes from the subtitles for one moment
This style of story telling is intense and builds with each new twist snd turn. I applaud the filmmakers it is quite an experience especially when it comes to the murder of three young teenagers. Keep a box of tissues near by.
Not a huge fan of Netflix but I do appreciate their lists of foreign documentary films - my condolences to the family and friends of thee lovely young women who were murdered.
Keishichô sôsaikka rûshî burakku man jiken (2023)
Lacking but interesting
Interesting how two different cultures conflict with each other in the police investigation of w Blackman. But the story behind the story like Lucile's upbringing her mother her father her siblings life before she became an airline hostess. What was her family life before she traveled to Japan? Too bad because it's an important story glad I watched the film yet too many holes. Was hoping there would be flashbacks but none really. I don't know if the parents chose that or not. For instance were her parents living together when Lucie disappeared? How did her father Tim support his time in Japan hiw king did he stay there what was his occupation? Where did Lucie grow up?
Narco Saints (2019)
Enjoyed This Dramatization
Good solid series. My only real complaint - sometimes dragged a bit in one or two episodes, however the action, scripts, cast all top notch. Yes it gets a bit bloody now and then but that's typical and probably expected of Asian films.
Put that aside, it's interesting. Beginning episodes filled with twists and turns. The middle episodes kept the intrigue and the final episodes, weren't sure who would make it or not and if it would finally end...
I don't want to give anything away as it would be unfair to anyone who hasn't seen it. I generally like the Asia films on Netflix (foreign series only reason I keep a subscription)....
for anyone who wants to binge on an interesting, historic, true to lie whodunit - enjoy! I wish I had more information on the actual events to compare it, but not really necessary.
The Ruth Rendell Mysteries: Vanity Dies Hard: Part 1 (1994)
Reviewing All Three Episodes - I enjoyed it immensely
I love mysteries and love television series especially the Brits - they sure know how to do it.
This is three parts - and each runs about 50 minutes. I enjoyed it - love the slow pace, the intrigue, who's the good guy who's the bad guy, always fun to try and guess the plots and scripts, but these are difficult.
Love the cast as well - and of course the scripts are solid. This series is as good as I can imagine it was when first broadcasted.
It's on YouTube - as are many of The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. I prefer the stories that run two or three in the series rather than just one.
Looking forward to watching more of them
Not to be missed.
The One (2021)
Loved it
Interesting premise science fiction that was completely convincing that led to intertwining plots characters whodunit, filled with suspense. The scripts were perfect, the cast was great! Never knew what would happen next, I binged out on a Friday later afternoon until midnight. Addictive!!! Something for everyone. The Brits really are top notch in the genre of suspense and mystery. Loved the costumes, loved the sets, logos, loved the cinematography, loved the character development. I really hope they do season two, but has to keep that same intensity and focus.
Lots of twists and turns, last episode as it should brought it all together. BRAVO.
Your Place or Mine (2023)
Speaking of Useless Films
Ashton lay off the plastic surgery
Reese you must have magic and good karma on your side that you can have such a poor boring useless senseless rather mundane film list in your Hello Sunshine that actually brought you close to a billion $$$
Must be that book club list you have of names and addresses....sort of like the Oprah formula
This is just another one of the dumb light heterosexual boring senseless romantic oh so fun films. A waste of money a waste of talent (and the talentless including the ridiculously bad supporting cast...not blaming the actors it's the script and the director)
But Reese is a genius at spinning out blah.
Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street (2023)
Surprisingly Fantastic
The poster and tag lines do not do this series justice. Four part documentary goes deep into the life of the main characters, the how of it, the extent of it. I don't want to give anything away with too much information since the series will share it all. The government agencies, the individuals - those who worked for Bernie those who enabled him, how it was all manipulated. Those interviewed gave and shared so much insight into the before during and the aftermath. There is a history to all of this and a huge international network of players. Congratulations to the producers, the researchers, director the entire team. Well done.
You (2018)
By Far The Most Ridiculous Waste of Money
This is obviously a generational matter to be considered.
This is neither funny nor entertaining.
The acting is stale, the scripts demented, the entire premise is exhausting by the end of episode one season one.
Who pays for these pieces of unadulterated bad taste, senseless scripts, bad acting, bad directing, horrible dialogues, and the once again going into the Darkness of Man's Mind.....
How much money did this cost to produce?
Who would finance this? And the bigger question is why?
Netflix seems to love to through money around just for the sheer joy of seeing if they can 'net' a winner. How do they recoup their financial investment - by researching statistics and demographics and looking for just the right combination to seduce a group of young people who obviously are poorly educated, have no sense of culture nor do they care.
Shamefully wasting money for nothing - it will be long forgotten with all too many Netflix original series and films...
Running Mates (2000)
Surprised to find this solid film on Youtube
GREAT CAST speaking of star studded, quite amazing that this fine ensemble cast was brought together for a TV film.
Solid script, direction is fine as well.
Although described as a comedy, there are just powerful dramatic moments that reflect the energy behind these huge decisions that effect our lives.
The US process of nominating a presidential candidate during a convention is interesting all by itself. The numbers of delegates, the speeches, the balloons, the signs, the noise, the jubilation for the winners. And what happened behind the scenes - always interesting.
There are several very good films both dramatic and comedic that address these issues.
I'm surprised that this made for TV movie was so good.
Often honest, sometimes raw, sometimes filled with the disappointments for the staff members, sometimes like chess pieces. Many easily swept away and never remembered or appreciated.
Well worth your time! And it's on YOUTUBE
Faye Dunaway is always a gem - nominated as well.
Laura Linney always solid
Score is good as well.....and of course behind the backdrop of Hollywood and issues such as abortion are part of it.....
Gypsy (2017)
WOW - WATCHING THIS IN DECEMBER 2022 ON NETFLIX WOW
I have to say that this is an unbelievable great series. Naomi Watts is brilliant - her acting is the best - best best best.
I had never heard of the series - which is from 2017 - and found it by accident on Netflix. What a great surprise. The entire cast - wow - many new faces for me - and they are just as great.
Sensuous, thrilling, suspenseful, edgy, script takes you on a trip in all directions, the premise is fascinating as well. The cinematography at moments just perfect to enhance the moment.
It's highly sexual, but it's filled with sensuality that is so seductive.
I haven't finished watching the series - and understand they only produced one season and many are disappointed a second season didn't manifest.
This is one of the few top notch television series that centers around a woman to woman relationship that's just so well done!!!
Congratulations to the writers, directors, cinematographers and the entire cast - many of them British - a BIG WOW
Don't miss it....watch it with an open mind - don't judge - sit back and appreciate an interesting series for adults.
