First things first: the acting in this is really good to say the least! And I don't say that lightly when it comes to German movies and this also being a tv production if I got that right? Then again many German movies are being made with money from TV, so there is that.
They mostly speak German here, but you also get Vietnamese and English thrown in for good measure. The version I watched did not have subtitles (Netflix), but most Vietnamese was translated for our main character, so you won't be missing much.
What you may be missing is a likeable main character - or maybe you can identify with him more than I did, but he is morally quite on the wrong side of many things. It is quite the achievement of the actor that we still stay with him, even when we see and know he doesn't always act in the right manner and tells quite a lot of lies ... it is a fine line he is walking and he's doing a good job. The real moral center is, who would have thought it: the woman he falls head over heels with ... but she also has her downfalls ... a tricky yet intriguing pairing, that will test your patience and your moral compass. What I did like, someone seems to have done their homework when it comes to backstory of the "unknown" land this plays outside Germany. Getting to know the culture and being able to portray that in this film is also an achievement in my book. Kudos to all who were responsible for that. Because it is easy to fall back on cliches ... and this movie did not do that!
