Playing Donald Trump’s mentor Roy Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice is not the first time Jeremy Strong has tackled recent American history. Before the actor became synonymous with Kendall Roy in Succession, he played parts in The Big Short, Selma and Parkland. While the actor feels a slight discomfort discussing acting choices for a film whose main subject “poses such a clear and present danger to you and I,” Strong is no less proud of the work. “I am happy with how it turned out and happy that I went for it,” he says. “I almost didn’t.”
Deadline: What made you run toward this role and this film?
Jeremy Strong: You run toward it, because it’s so dangerous. Because it’s been done before brilliantly. It was done by Al Pacino [in Angels in America] in a really definitive way, that had such an impact on me.

“The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up” director Adam McKay took to social media as Donald Trump edged closer to victory in the U.S. presidential election, saying he plans to leave the Democratic Party.
In a post on X, he shared a link for updating voter registration and wrote: “It is time to abandon the Dem Party. I’m registering Green Party or Working Families. But am open to ideas.”
McKay has previously supported the Democratic Party, and endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in 2016 and 2020. However, in 2019 he said he had also joined the Democratic Socialists of America. He has been vocal about the need for climate action and signed an open letter to Joe Biden in October 2023 calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
He criticized the Democratic Party’s election strategy in a post on X earlier in the night, writing: “Who would have guessed lying about Biden’s cognitive health for 2 yrs,...

Billy Magnussen is used to playing a beefcake. His first big job was on the soap opera As the World Turns. In Into the Woods, his version of Rapunzel’s Prince wore leather pants even when riding a horse. He served as the resident hunk among the ensembles in Game Night and The Big Short. These castings, flattering as they might be, haven’t always reflected the man himself, a classically trained actor who has a Tony nomination (for 2013’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike).
But in his latest role, Magnussen, 39, finally has found something a little more relatable, one that simultaneously fuels his character’s ego and leaves him plagued by self-doubt.
The satirical series The Franchise centers around the ill-fated production of a fictional superhero film whose big-budget snafus (an emergency pro-feminism rewrite, disputes over which actors get the biggest superpowers) poke fun at Hollywood’s IP obsession.

For Charlize Theron, the world of media and entertainment is one of the most effective tools when it comes to commenting on the present day’s social politics. The movie star found her efforts in that field, via her Oscar-nominated role in the 2019 film Bombshell, rather impressive when it allowed her to recreate the Me Too movement in the form of a brilliant satire.

But when it came to the real Megyn Kelly – the Fox News anchor who Theron portrayed in the film – the ideologies of the two celebrity figures didn’t quite match up where they should have. Despite playing her fictional alter-ego in Bombshell and coming to understand the woman for all her flaws and courage, there remained a vast chasm of things left unsaid between the two.

Steve Carell is one of the finest comedy actors today, but this was not his goal in mind when he was starting his career. Unlike other actors who knew where they were heading when they ventured into the entertainment industry, he just went with the flow and it took him in a better direction.

"If you dig deep enough, the inconsistencies will emerge." HBO has revealed the trailer for a documentary film titled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, another investigative look at Bitcoin and the world of cryptocurrency. This would play well as a double feature with Alex Winter's excellent doc Trust Machine: The Story of Blockchain a few years back. "In the future of money, who holds the power?" Indeed. In Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, intrepid filmmaker Cullen Hoback dives into the origins of Bitcoin and the identity of its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The captivating new doc film offers a thrilling, globe-spanning investigation, with Hoback immersing himself with key players, uncovering never-before-seen clues, and humorously unraveling Bitcoin's meteoric rise. It's executive produced by Adam McKay (director of The Big Short), Todd Schulman, Cullen Hoback, and Taylor Jones. And it'll be streaming on Max later this month. It's bizarre to even consider, but at one point, Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei auditioned to play Penny on "The Big Bang Theory" — and while it's hard to imagine her in Kaley Cuoco's role, it's also funny to imagine an alternate universe with Tomei as the show's bubbly female lead.
Fans of "The Big Bang Theory" know there was a decent amount of strife over who would play Penny — one actress, Katie Walsh, was replaced after a badly-shot pilot didn't impress CBS — but it's definitely shocking to hear that Tomei was in the mix. In 2022, Tomei opened up about "The Big Bang Theory" and said that she did like the project, and obviously had no idea that it would be such a huge pop culture phenomenon.

When producer David Beaubaire was an executive at Warner Bros., DreamWorks, Paramount, and Sony, he made movies like “Up in the Air,” “Dreamgirls,” “Flight,” and “The Big Short” — the kinds of original studio projects that aren’t often made today.
Development has always been a gamble, requiring many years and millions of dollars for a film that’s more likely to flop than to hit — if it ever gets made at all. It’s also become increasingly rare. Beaubaire studied 505 films released and/or to be released by major studios between 2022 and 2026 and found that the titles championed by a studio executive — someone who courted filmmakers and talent, went through rewrites, and saw it through to its release — accounted for 10 percent of the total.

Not every child actor story turns out to be a tragedy. The Disney Channel child star to super rich adult pipeline is real, and Selena Gomez is the latest star to take it to new heights, according to a fresh report from Bloomberg. The "Only Murders in the Building" star is officially a billionaire, with a net worth of $1.3 billion dollars, but most of that money didn't come from her acting and musical career.
According to the outlet, Gomez has made her millions via a combination of acting, singing, brand partnerships, a mental health startup, and -- most importantly -- a mega-successful makeup line called Rare Beauty Brands. So, what does reportedly being richer than Zendaya or Miley Cyrus mean for the actor who first got her start on Disney's fantasy family comedy show "Wizards of Waverly Place"? Tommy Wirkola’s shark film has a flashy new title and a release date. More on Beneath The Storm below.
We first heard of Tommy Wirkola’s shark film last May when we reported that Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor was in talks to join the then-untitled film.
That film now has a title: Beneath The Storm. Deadline also reports that the film is heading to US cinemas on 1st August next year, courtesy of Sony Pictures. There’s no word on a UK release but we’re sure it’ll show up on a release schedule eventually.
In May, the plot details were kept under wraps and unfortunately that hasn’t changed. All we know is that the film is directed by Wirkola, stars Dynevor and it’ll have sharks. It’s not much to go on, but fans of films like Deep Blue Sea and The Shallows have plenty to get excited about here.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon plan to tell the story of former wrestler Hulk Hogan’s highly publicized lawsuit against the now-defunct news website Gawker in their new movie “Killing Gawker.” The film will focus on Hogan’s 2012 defamation case, which resulted in a $115 million judgment against Gawker for publishing a tape of Hogan engaged in a private act without his consent.
While an upcoming biopic starring Chris Hemsworth will chronicle Hogan’s wrestling career, “Killing Gawker” will concentrate specifically on one controversial chapter – Hogan’s legal battle raising questions around privacy, freedom of the press, and tabloid ethics. Affleck and Damon, known for fact-based films like “Argo” and “The Big Short,” aim to explore this complex case and its wider implications on media and privacy.
Unlike the Hemsworth project, Hogan is not involved in “Killing Gawker.” His absence could allow a more unfiltered depiction of events. However, Bubba the Love Sponge Clem,...

Steve Carell first came to prominence as a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” appearing as a regular cast member from 1999 to 2005. He left the nightly news satire to play bumbling boss Michael Scott in “The Office,” a role which brought him six Emmy nominations as Best Comedy Actor and a Golden Globe win in 2006.
After supporting roles in such films as “Bruce Almighty” (2003), “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004), “Melinda and Melinda” (2004), and “Bewitched” (2005), Carell moved into leading man status playing a middle-aged man seeking to have sex for the first time in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005). He received wide critical acclaim the very next year for playing a gay Proust scholar in the Oscar-winning “Little Miss Sunshine.”

Exclusive: Convexity Films, the production company of filmmaker Richard Dewey (Radical Wolfe), has optioned the Michael Lewis book The New New Thing: A Silicon Valley Story for development as a narrative feature.
The deal came together following Dewey’s collaboration with Lewis on his feature documentary Radical Wolfe, about author and journalist Tom Wolfe, which adapted an acclaimed Vanity Fair article from Lewis.
Published by W. W. Norton & Company in 1999, the bestseller is described as an insightful and engaging exploration of the dot-com boom and the technological innovations that fueled it. The book focuses on the life and ventures of Jim Clark, a Silicon Valley pioneer who founded three billion-dollar companies in the early days of the Internet: Silicon Graphics, Netscape, and Healtheon. Through the prism of Clark’s work, Lewis provides a look at the culture of innovation, risk-taking, and entrepreneurship that defined the late 20th-century tech industry.

Uhh… is this fucking play about us? You may have heard the rumors that Ben Affleck, 0f (maybe) former Bennifer fame, is in talks to play Hulk Hogan in a film about the downfall of Gawker, the former parent site of Jezebel and Splinter and thus The A.V. Club’s relative through marriage.

Back in 2012, Gawker published a leaked sex tape of former WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan that led to a lawsuit backed by PayPal co-founder and conservative firebrand Peter Thiel. The $115 million verdict ultimately led to the demise of Gawker, and there’s been a screenplay about the saga making the rounds in Hollywood for a while. According to a new report from PWInsider, the movie is now “expected to move forward in the days ahead” with the backing of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the latter of whom is eyeing the role of Hogan.
If the rumors bear out, Damon and Affleck would pick up the project, titled Killing Gawker, through their Artist Equity production company with a reported January 2025 launch in mind. Damon would also star in the film as Thiel. Update: Gus Van Sant — who previously directed Damon and Affleck in Good Will Hunting — is in talks to helm Killing Gawker.

The 58th Karlovy Vary Film International Film Festival kicked off with a very personal milestone, commemorating 30 years since the event was taken over by the programming team of Jiří Bartoška and the late journalist Eva Zaoralová. The veteran actor, now 77, gave the festival cause for concern last year when health problems threatened to keep him away from the event. This year, however, Bartoška was the main focus of the traditionally baroque opening ceremony, taking us back to 1994 with memories of Nelson Mandela, TV’s Friends, cinema’s Pulp Fiction, and the first iterations of PlayStation and Bluetooth technology.
There followed a lengthy tribute to Bartoška at work, welcoming a veritable cavalcade of stars; names so famous that for a few minutes, it was possible to forget the festival’s unfortunate tendency to stick with Hollywood stars a tad too long into their wilderness periods (Mel Gibson and Johnny Depp spring...

Glenda Jackson became the most recent person to join the club when she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in for “Three Tall Women” in 2018.
While the recent 77th Tony Awards didn’t produce another Triple Crown Acting champion (there was no Tony-less Oscar and Emmy winner in contention), it is possible that some unsuspecting thespian was put on course to becoming the 25th name on the list above. And so the awards plot thickens.

The Other Guys Director Adam McKay Wanted to Make ‘The Boys’ Movie Trilogy Back in 2008 - Main Image
Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys has become one of the most celebrated comic book adaptations today, but the series could have ended up being a whole trilogy of movies that came out on the big screen.
As it turns out, there was actually a plan to make a whole trilogy based on The Boys around the same time that Iron Man came out; but development didn’t push through, and fans got the show that’s currently streaming on Prime.
According to Rolling Stone, director Adam McKay was actually developing an adaptation of The Boys which they were planning to turn into a trilogy of films. Ryan Gosling, the dreamy hunk & laudable talent, has become an emblematic figure of Tinseltown, especially after the colossal hit, Barbie. From the gripping action thriller Drive to the epic crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines, and, of course, to the financial maestro in The Big Short, his artistry spans a kaleidoscope of roles.
And who could overlook that spontaneous quip in The Big Short that had us all convinced of his impromptu prowess? Yes, this 2015 biographical crime comedy-drama, in which Gosling’s brazen remark about his “math specialist”, piqued our interest with its raw spontaneity. The legacy of Marvel is embedded in the arc of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans as Iron Man and Captain America respectively and no one cares less about their impact than Christian Bale. The actor who once portrayed an iconic DC character himself – came out the other end branded as a legend who never knew where to start when it came to Marvel.

As an official entrant into the Marvel universe, it is time to throw Bale under the microscope and study the indifference with which he handled an era of Cbm icons that had such a hold over the entire world for 11 straight years.
